Locking in net zero operational energy through the masterplanning process

Locking in net zero operational energy through the masterplanning process

Author: Andrew Komarnycky , Principal Engineer for Expedition Engineering's Civils and Masterplanning?team.

With the increasing demand on ground level public realm and ongoing climate crisis, the masterplanning process is under immense pressure to provide local planning authorities with a clear grasp of how new proposals will affect whole life carbon.

By using 3D parametric design tools effectively and iteratively with our clients and collaborators, we are rapidly evaluating the plans to ensure orientation and massing are optimised; reducing overheating, enhancing comfort, and maximising passive design principles. This means homes are cheaper to run, emit less lifetime carbon, and are more comfortable.

As a combination of demand and viability challenges in our current economic climate, we’re seeing more developments proposing buildings of 30 or more storeys. The inevitable impact on carbon,?particularly in the upfront carbon embedded in the substructure, is increased with the need for additional stair/lift cores. Our optimisation process identifies locations which are performing ‘poorly’ against these design metrics, allowing us to rapidly test alternatives and quantitatively assess performance against options and trade-offs.
