However, an MSRC posting says that the critical Microsoft Outlook vulnerability is "triggered when an attacker sends a message with an extended MAPI property with a UNC path to an SMB (TCP 445) share on a threat actor-controlled server. No interaction is required." The posting continues to explain that the connection to a remote SMB (server message block) server sends the user new technology LAN manager (NTLM) negotiation message which is then relayed for authentication against supporting systems. "Online services such as Microsoft 365 do not support NTLM authentication," the MSRC posting confirms, so are not vulnerable to this exploit.”
