Location, location, location

We found out that there is more to the location field in the last newsletter. We could find more talent. Are we there yet?

No, there is more. A lot more.

If people make a profile, they must choose a country. That is a fact. After this, you can optionally select a postal code. And if you live in a country without postal codes, you can choose a city optionally.



See the word optionally. It is not mandatory.

Can you find people if you search in several cities, in an area, or in a postal code with a radius if they only filled out their country?

The short answer is no.

I have done this research in 2022. And I found this error by coincidence when I was having dinner with one of my best friends, Michiel Wiersema .

The solution is found in this research document. I teach this trick to every recruiter I train. And still, many people need to remember this. About 15% of all the profiles in the Netherlands have only Netherlands selected without a postal code.

Let's do another example, especially for my French friend (I have to try not to type fries here ??). Search every province in France.

Add those to your search. Exclude them and include France. And tada, you have 3.9M profiles, which usually are not visible in your search. And, of course, this is the whole talent pool of France.

Imagine that you only have a couple of people left. These are just a few that many recruiters do not find. Wow, your response rate will go through the roof.

Okay, do you know if I always do this search? Yes, most of the time, I do this.

  1. Search for a location or a location with a postal code and a radius.
  2. Search for people who are willing to relocate. See my latest newsletter.
  3. Search for people who have only filled out their country.


I hear you think this is much work.

No, it is not.

The only thing with the last step is that you have to dig deeper into their experience and education or look outside of LinkedIn. Why? To ensure they don't, in the example of France, live in Lille while you search for a role in Montpellier. Or, otherwise, send them a message.
