Local Legend - Lucy Kirk
George Southwell
CEO of Ray White Rural Canberra | Yass | Murrumbateman & Farmer & Leader
When Lucy’s not wrangling the spotlight at her local show, she’s busy wrangling words as the Senior Journalist at Writers Who, where she keeps businesses like mine looking sharp with first-class communications content. Her love for agriculture, her local community and a laugh makes her a good one in my books, and I couldn’t be prouder to introduce her to you as a local legend.
Tell me a little bit about yourself and your connection to Condobolin. I was born and bred in Condo, and despite detouring to boarding school and university, I just couldn’t stay away. Growing up in a small, tight-knit community instilled in me a strong sense of belonging and pride, so even though I handle communications for businesses across Australia, Condo will always be home.?
What does it mean to you to be named the Condobolin AgShows Young Woman for 2024? It’s very special. The Young Woman program celebrates young women in agriculture and emphasises community involvement and leadership. Moving back to the land has magnified in my mind the role that women play in sustaining small communities like Condo, so being able to “officially” champion women on the land is super exciting.
How did you get involved with agricultural shows, and what do you love most about them? I have my family to thank for that. I’d say about 50% of the show committee is related to me in some way, and I grew up with a dad who’s done just about every job there - from President to Licensee (which is handy if you're after free drinks). I started out competing in the pavilion sections as a kid, became the Junior Showgirl in 2007, and have been involved ever since. What I love most about Ag Shows is how they bring absolutely everyone together - it’s a fantastic space for connection and community building.

Tell me about your role at Writers Who and how you work that in with your life at Condo???
At Writers Who, I handle strategic communications content for a variety of agricultural and real estate businesses, including Ray White Rural Yass. I write on behalf of CEO’s, Directors, government entities and industry leaders, all from out in the sticks at Condo (Starlink is my saving grace.) The role allows me to combine my passion for rural life with my professional career, and with a busy farm life and an LED work lights business to run, the emphasis Writers Who place on being pragmatic and flexible suits me perfectly.
What’s next for you? What are you most excited about? I’m excited about the opportunity to represent Condobolin as the 2024 Young Woman and?I’m deeply focused on growing at Writers Who and crafting impactful content while also working on personal writing projects. I am currently in the process of launching “Her Beauty and Her Terror: The Australian Country Women’s Anthology” which will evolve into a curated collection of poetry from everyday Australian women. If you know someone who’d like to submit a poem, they can do so here: https://www.herbeautyandherterror.com/ or find out more by emailing me:? [email protected]
