Local Heroes - A story by Mark Reynolds

Local Heroes - A story by Mark Reynolds

Local Heros…for old folk it’s a film, I’m not old, well not in an employment context. I’m a newcomer to the energy industry and have been surprised now I am in it what its like and all about, albeit I also know Katoni isn’t typical of all companies. However, I have got to know about Bold Heros, Local Heros and Super Heros in the company.

When I was asked to write about Local Heroes, naturally I wanted to write about Cove Rangers. The team is full of absolute legends, including me. I don’t think there is any doubt I’d be classed as a Local Hero, I won the league cup in 2014 in case you didn’t know. ?One of my teammates, Blair Yule, also works at Katoni. This year Blair has been granted a Testimonial which basically involves a celebration of his football career, 10 years at one club. He is a Local Hero who delivers for my team and the fans (even if the Montrose, Arbroath and Brechin fans don’t like him much).

From outside the industry, as a footballer, and reading the news I see the industry and businesses bashed by politicians and see marches against investment the future of the industry. However, in Aberdeen over years I have seen something different. I see an industry which provides jobs, obviously energy security, but also contributes to local causes which support local people. The industry is a Local Hero which delivers for the rest of the country (even if some of the rest of the country doesn’t like us much).

I see Local Heroes around me at Katoni. They’d suit being Super Local Heros because some would need very large capes, some should genuinely wear masks, and some have very ‘special’ powers. On a serious note, they’ve welcomed me to the team in the last two years and made the transition to industry easy. What I would also add is as a business I love that we recruit apprentices, graduates, return to work mums, old people, and all sorts in a flexible work environment. Katoni is a Local Hero (ok that’s a stretch).

Finally, we recent announced a partnership with AFCCT, it is important to me as it shows we are committing to the real Local Heros, those who are supporting those who need supported most! All businesses should do this I think.

Great piece, love it!

Lovely piece Mark written by someone who’s embraced what we’ve got up here and in turn we’ve embraced your and your family since you made the move to this city. Speaking on behalf of quite a few business colleagues I know you’re held in high esteem both at work and as an individual ??
