Local Black History Month Tribute
William Scurry, a native of Buffalo, New York, first came to Charlotte in 1982 with his wife to begin his Queen City career. After 30 years of service before his passing in 2017, William along with his team of agents successfully assisted more than 2000 families with their real estate needs.
During his career, as head of Scurry and Associates his team consistently ranked among the top 10% of agents, earning many awards and distinctions such as Allen Tate’s President’s Club for service with over $185 million in accumulative volume.
William always had a natural talent for helping others. Part of his motivation for the profession was ignited by the injustice he saw as a boy when his parents showed up for an appointment with a local real estate firm just to have the shades closed and snickering behind the locked door. But this, as a Realtor fueled him to be part of the solution that helps people achieve the American dream through home ownership.
This desire to be “part of the solution” went beyond his professional role of Realtor and earned him the nickname of “Mayor of University City” for his involvement in the community. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Charlotte Regional Realtors Association, Chairman of the Board with the University YMCA, awardee of the YMCA’s “George Williams Award” for branch leadership, a member of the Board of Directors of the local Alzheimer’s Association, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Charlotte Housing Authority.
William’s commitment to building a legacy affected everyone around him. He was determined to live a life pleasing to God and used his faith to help many others. With that same faith, he made his mark on Charlotte and through his real estate profession – he was determined to always exhibit the highest level of integrity so that he would continually earn the respect and trust of his clients and would be confident to hear the words “Well done, good and faithful servant!” when his time would come. He did!
