Local baseball field gets an upgrade; Washington Monument lighting to take place this week

Good morning Baltimore!

BBJ Highlight: Today I'd like to share news of a local aircraft engine manufacturer that is planning to open a facility on Canton's waterfront. North American Wave Engine Corp. is planning the 7,500-square-foot facility after raising a $3.5 million round.

Now, for the news of the day.

  • This is your final reminder to double-check that you do not have any outstanding video tolls, as the state's nine-month grace period on late fees for such tolls ends Thursday. Note: video tolls are separate from E-ZPass accounts. You can check your account online at Find My Tolls. After Thursday, the $25 late fee will kick in. Since the grace period began in February, MDTA has waived $137 million in late fees for about 756,000 drivers and businesses. Baltimore Sun
  • Carroll Park's baseball field just got an upgrade, including cleaning the field, laying new sod, updating fencing, repairing benches and more. The community space in the Washington Village/Pigtown neighborhood was improved through a partnership between the Baltimore Orioles and 百事 Stronger Together. The three-year collaboration seeks to update one city baseball field each year. Baltimore Fishbowl
  • A few weeks out from Election Day and we're still recording some historic firsts. In Maryland, Joe Vogel and Jeffrie Long Jr. became the first members of Generation Z to be elected to the state's General Assembly. Vogel is a 25-year-old political activist who will represent the people of Rockville and Gaithersburg with a focus on making resources more available to all. Long is 26 and will represent District 27B, which covers portions of Prince George's and Calvert counties, and will focus on advocating for bill on infrastructure, transportation and housing. • In other local political news, Gordana Schifanelli, the former running mate of failed Republican gubernatorial candidate Dan Cox, will not be able to follow through on a bid to become the new state Republican Party chair amid a disagreement over the filing deadline. The current and outgoing GOP chairman said Schifanelli and other candidates missed the filing deadline on Nov. 9, but Schifanelli wrote on Twitter that she was "blocked from running." Baltimore Sun
  • As Baltimore County works to meet its ambitious renewable energy goals, it has turned to rotting garbage for the answer. Four electric generators in White Marsh are now being powered by methane, a greenhouse gas produced by decomposing garbage. It's a unique alternative to powering renewable energy projects with solar energy, wind or water. WYPR
  • In Windsor Mill, the state's first green cemetery is preparing to open. The concept is simple. It's a cemetery that allows for natural burials that use biodegradable materials to let a body decompose in the earth, instead of the more traditional approach of caskets and embalming. Serenity Ridge Natural Burial Cemetery will replace farmland but will remain wild, free and untouched by development. Baltimore Sun
  • The holiday season is getting underway in Greater Baltimore and there's now a date for the city's annual Washington Monument lighting. The event in Mount Vernon will take place on Dec. 1, starting at 5 p.m. with the monument lighting at 8 p.m. The event will include a larger offering of local food and drink vendors, as well as live performances. • Out in Annapolis, the annual Midnight Madness shopping event will also return on Thursday, in which businesses in a certain area will stay open late on the first three Thursdays in December leading up to Christmas. The event includes shopping deals, refreshments, carolers and other performers. Also new this year, is a holiday market that will open at City Dock on Dec. 8. Baltimore Sun
