?? Local Actions, Global Impact: Sustainable Development in UNESCO Biospheres ???
As the #ClimateCrisis accelerates, water management has never been more critical. With rising temperatures ???, unpredictable rainfall ???, and increasing urban development, our #ChalkAquifer plays a vital role in both supplying water and preventing flooding. But without careful management, these natural underground water reserves are at risk.
Our work is part of a global movement. Through the “Promoting Sustainable Development through UNESCO Programmes and Sites” project—led by UNESCO and supported by aberdeen Charitable Foundation (aCF)—15 UNESCO Biospheres across Europe and North America are demonstrating how local action can address global environmental challenges. From flood mitigation and climate adaptation to biodiversity conservation, these Biospheres are proving that sustainable development is key to achieving the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs).
At The Aquifer Project, hosted by The Living Coast UNESCO Biosphere , we are working with University of Brighton and key partners on ‘The Sustainable Management of Urban Aquifers’ by examining water quality and flooding prevention strategies in Wild Park with the development of Wild Park Rainscape. By studying how water moves through our landscape and engaging local communities in sustainable practices, we aim to create a resilient water system that increases #biodiversity. Allowing people, nature, and water to thrive together ????
This video from the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe showcases the incredible work happening across our sister site #Biospheres. Watch and share to celebrate the power of collaboration, innovation, and nature-based solutions. Together, we celebrate the strength of partnerships that make meaningful change possible.
