In today's globalized world, studying abroad is a dream for many Indian students. However, recent economic changes have made this dream more challenging to achieve. The falling rupee has adversely affected Indian students abroad, leading to difficulties in loan repayments and increased education costs. As a business mentor, I, Satyendra K Singh, believe that understanding these challenges and preparing for them is crucial for students, businesses, and institutions alike.
The Financial Burden: Increased Education Costs
Indian students studying abroad face dual challenges. A 5% rupee depreciation in six months has increased education costs, adding ?5 lakh to a ?1 crore study budget (The Economic Times, 2025). This financial burden is particularly pronounced in countries like the US, where annual education costs average ?59 lakh. Stricter visa norms in the UK and Canada further complicate post-study work and residency opportunities (Hindustan Times, 2025).
The Employment Conundrum: Challenges for South Asian Immigrants
After spending just two days in India and speaking with over 200 students across three institutions, it has become clearer why many South Asian immigrants face challenges entering the job market abroad. The education and learning systems in India emphasize grades as the primary determinant of success. However, the job-seeking process in many ways is facilitated by institutions bringing jobs to students, with academics and experience dictating success (Times of India, 2025).
Adapting to New Environments: Skills and Factors in Demand
When Indian students move abroad, they encounter a significant shift in the skills and factors in demand. The focus in North America, for instance, is more on networking and personal branding than just credibility (Forbes, 2025). This change often makes students uncomfortable, but those who embrace the discomfort and adapt to the new approach are at ease later.
The Importance of Adaptability: A Global Perspective
What I have realized is that this adaptability is not only important for students who want to go abroad but for everyone. As competition increases globally, accessing opportunities will look very different. With more people earning degrees, gaining experiences, and obtaining certificates, employers will need additional factors to differentiate among applicants (Harvard Business Review, 2025).
The Indian Job Market: Preparing for Future Trends
While the current Indian job market may not mirror these trends, it is likely to evolve similarly. There may be a reduction in placements via institutions, a shift to potential-based hiring, and an emphasis on soft skills. This shift will require students to be aware of market changes and willing to adapt quickly (The Hindu, 2025).
The Broader Implications: Market and Economy
The impact of these changes will be significant for students, the job market, and the economy. Rising unemployment and increasing concerns about the skill gap among institutions highlight the need for a proactive approach. Students must focus on developing soft skills, networking, and personal branding to stay competitive (Business Standard, 2025).
The Role of Businesses and Institutions
Businesses and institutions play a crucial role in preparing students for these challenges. Here are some ways they can help:
- Career Counseling and Training Programs: Institutions should offer career counseling and training programs focused on soft skills, networking, and personal branding.
- Industry Partnerships: Form partnerships with industries to provide students with real-world experience and insights into market demands.
- Global Exposure: Encourage and facilitate global exposure through internships, exchange programs, and collaborations with international institutions (Mint, 2025).
The Road Ahead: Embracing Change and Opportunities
As Indian students navigate these challenges, it is essential for them to embrace change and seize opportunities. The ability to adapt to new environments, develop essential skills, and build personal brands will set them up for success in the global job market.
In conclusion, while the financial burden and challenges may seem daunting, they also present opportunities for growth and learning. By preparing for these changes and adapting to new demands, Indian students can thrive in their academic and professional journeys.
