‘Loadsaweeminsingin' – the new choir in residence at Discovery Point

Dundee Heritage Trust and Discovery Point are excited to welcome 'Loadsweeminsinging' as their new (and first-ever) choir of residence. The choir will be singing and practising at Discovery Point on Monday evenings during their term time to work on new songs and put together programmes of songs for the various events LWS plan to participate in.????????

Anna Newell established this women's community choir in 1994 at Dundee Rep. The group took part in many productions and events at the Theatre at that time and became very popular. When Anna left for Ireland ten years later, the group's running was taken over by Sarah Harrop - one of the group members - and she ran it for another ten years. In 2014, Alice Marra took over the running of the group, and LWS spent a few years as a choir in-residence at The McManus.

The group has been heard singing at various events such as weddings, funerals, fundraising concerts, Christmas lights events and professional shows. LWS has collaborated with many outstanding musicians, such as Ricky Ross, Sheena Wellington, Lorna Brookes and Michael Marra. They were the stars of Michael's operetta, "If the moon can be believed."

''All of us in LWS are absolutely thrilled and honoured to have been asked to be a choir in residence at Discovery Point. The choir will celebrate 30 years of singing next year, and to be beginning a new chapter in this iconic building is going to be so exciting and inspiring. We look forward to working with Dundee Heritage Trust on many different collaborations, the first of which will come later this year.?'' - Alice Marra

LWS began in 1994 at Dundee Rep and has gone through many changes over the years. The one constant is the fun, friendship and support the group gives to the women who attend. Singing has been proven to be hugely beneficial to mental and physical health and can have such a positive effect on lots of different aspects of life.

" Dundee Heritage Trust is thrilled to welcome LWS to Discovery Point as our choir in residence. LWS is a pillar in the Dundee community, and we're looking forward to collaborating in the coming months and years. It's a happy coincidence that LWS celebrates its 30th?birthday the same year as Discovery Point, making the union all the more fitting. ‘’ -Emma Halford-Frobes, Director of Heritage and Exhibitions at Dundee Heritage Trust

The group is 60 strong at the moment. Over the years, hundreds of women have benefitted from being in this wonderful group. The choir currently has a long waiting list, and if anyone would like to join the list, they can contact LWS on their?Facebook group?or e-mail?[email protected].

Lovely to see this - wondering if WIS can discover any female written shanty songs or songs about the sea - that would take the biscuit!
