The LMS Files: The Hidden Time Sink of LMS Setup for Faculty

Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Blackboard and Canvas have become central to course delivery in nearly every institution of higher education today. They promise streamlined access to materials, assessments, and communication, yet the reality for many faculty is a cumbersome and time-consuming setup process. The shift to digital first learning has unintentionally shifted administrative burdens onto instructors who are already managing heavy workloads.

Studies highlight a consistent issue: LMS setup demands far more time than traditional course preparation. Faculty are not merely uploading content—they're navigating steep learning curves, complex configurations, and extensive customization. According to Vermette et al. (2022), many educators rely on peer support or trial-and-error, adding significant hours of unpaid labor to their tasks.

Key Insight

The hidden costs of LMS setup go beyond time alone. Many faculty report that the time spent configuring these tools detracts from their primary focus: teaching and engaging with students.

Takeaway

Institutions must reconsider their approach to LMS training and support, moving beyond a one-size-fits-all model. Instead, offering tailored, just-in-time training and domain-specific walk-throughs can address the unique needs of different disciplines and course structures.

On-demand resources, such as interactive video tutorials and contextual guides, can provide continuous, accessible support that adapts to the instructor’s level of expertise and specific course requirements.

By streamlining onboarding and integrating user-friendly interfaces with flexible, responsive training options, institutions can significantly enhance faculty satisfaction and free up more time for meaningful, student-centered teaching.

While I find setting up the course in the LMS fairly easy, it still takes much more time than classroom delivery would, and this is not reflected in revised compensation for adjunct faculty because of the “scheme” of only paying for classroom hours, not prep.
