If you don’t believe me, let me take you on a wild ride through the dark underbelly of the internet where LLMs (Large Language Models) have been weaponized, and the stakes are higher than ever. Yes, I’ve done it weaponized LLMs to deliver malware (undetectable, by the way) to study how to defend against these attacks. So far, it’s been a bit of a laugh... UNDETECTABLE! Or maybe that’s just because the LLM had a grey hat like me instructing it, lol!
Let’s dive into the world of prompt injections, shall we?
Imagine this: you’re casually browsing your favorite website, and unbeknownst to you, a plain white .png image has been embedded with a prompt injection. Yes, you heard that right! This seemingly innocent image is a ticking time bomb, ready to unleash chaos on your unsuspecting LLM.
How does this work, you ask? Well, the prompt injection can be cleverly hidden within the metadata of the image or even in the HTML of the website. When an LLM processes this image, it can be tricked into executing commands that redirect users to malicious websites.
Picture this: you click on a link, and suddenly you’re whisked away to a phishing site, where cyber criminals are eagerly waiting to harvest your personal information. And if you think it stops there, think again! These sites could host drive-by malware attacks or droppers, which can silently install malicious software on your device without you even noticing. Scary, right?
But wait, there’s more!
Let’s talk about image markdown injections. This is where things get even more interesting (and by interesting, I mean terrifying). When you embed an image in a markdown file, your browser will automatically connect to the attacker’s URL without any user interaction. It’s like inviting a vampire into your home without realizing it!
Imagine you’re reading an article that has a seemingly harmless image. But lurking behind that image is a malicious URL that connects back to the attacker’s server. The browser does all the heavy lifting, and before you know it, you’ve unwittingly opened the door to a world of cyber chaos. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized access to your accounts, and a whole lot of headaches.
Now, let’s talk about scraping tools. If you’re using an LLM to scrape data from the web, you need to be extra cautious. While scraping can be a powerful tool for gathering information, it also opens the door to vulnerabilities. If a malicious actor has embedded prompt injections or image markdown injections in the pages you’re scraping, you could inadvertently execute harmful commands or connect to dangerous URLs. It’s like walking through a minefield blindfolded one wrong step, and you’re in deep trouble.
