#97 LLM Wars: ChatGPT and Claude in an Epic Clash of Titans

We all root for OpenAI and appreciate their immense contributions to advancing humanity through groundbreaking innovation. However, it's natural to ponder the potential trajectory of OpenAI, drawing parallels with the journey of Netscape. While one must acknowledge the limitations of such a comparison, the undeniable similarities offer a captivating insight into the intricate path that tech companies, especially fast-growing category creators, traverse. This analogy becomes particularly fascinating when I contemplate my own evolving utilization of powerful tools like ChatGPT, ClaudeAI, and to some extent Bard.

In tech industry, it is not uncommon for the second generation of players to emerge as dominant forces, eclipsing their first-generation counterparts. We are all familiar with the narrative of initial search engines and early social media companies. In the case of Anthropic with Claude.AI, it remains to be seen if they will assume the mantle of the second generation or if our predictions are premature. Within the high-stakes landscape of technology, success or failure does not materialize overnight; it unfolds like an epic tale. Each triumph or setback represents a chapter in a saga that spans years, marked by confrontations, strategic shifts, and unexpected twists. The ending of this narrative often eludes predictability, shaped by a myriad of decisions, market dynamics, and, at times, even serendipity.

Shining Armors and Achilles' Heels

One major drawback of ChatGPT is its constant reminder of outdated data, which is limited to September 2021. This puts it at a disadvantage when compared to Bard and Claude, both of which have access to more current information. Moreover, despite the presence of the Wolfram plugin, ChatGPT's ability to perform calculations falls short of expectations. In contrast, Claude exceeds expectations with flawless execution of calculations, firmly establishing its superiority in this domain.

Let's not dismiss ChatGPT hastily. When it comes to content interpretation and curation, ChatGPT surpasses the competition by a wide margin, rendering the notion of competition irrelevant. However, in its pursuit of a more equitable world, ChatGPT is consistently degrading its content curation abilities (in my opinion, this may be a result of excessive reliance on RLHF).

Claude faces a significant challenge in how it interprets responsible AI (we all know in tech, every bug can be seen as a feature if perceived correctly). While ChatGPT has faced criticism for potential liberal bias, Claude refrains from venturing into areas it deems unsafe. However, this limitation could prove detrimental to Claude's long-term prospects, potentially leading to ChatGPT surpassing it in terms of functionality and effectiveness.

Conclusion

Being a trailblazer is no simple feat, as challengers constantly strive to dethrone the market leader. However, this fierce competition ultimately drives progress, benefiting us all. Both Anthropic and OpenAI must continue to astonish us with their innovation and we can sit back, unwind, and enjoy the spectacle with a bowl of popcorn.
