Open Source of the Week

Here are some updates and new open-source projects.

Llama 3.3 70B Model

Meta released last week a new version of the Llama model 70B (version 3.3). According to Meta's benchmark, this new model performs in most categories close to the Llama 3.1 405B model and, in some cases, achieves a higher score.

Those results aligned with the current trend and effort to minimize the models' size while improving their performance.

Ollama 0.5

The Ollama team released version 0.5 last week. This new version includes support for structured outputs. This enables users to define with the model schema the model output into a specific format. More details are available in the release post:

The mall project

Posit PBC recently announced a new open-source project - mall. The goal of this project is to enable users to run NLP operations on data frames using local LLM. The project is available for both R and Python. More details are available in the release post:

Open Instruct

Open Instruct is a new project by Ai2 that focuses on instruction-tuning of popular pre-trained language models on publicly available datasets:

New Learning Resources

Here are some new learning resources that I came across this week.

Forecasting with Nixtla

A great episode of the AI Stories podcast about time series forecasting. Neil Leiser hosts Max Mergenthaler Canseco CEO and Co-founder of Nixtla .

Bayes' Theorem

Introduction to the Bayes' Theorem?by Prof. Steve Brunton.

An Introduction to UV

Introduction to Python new package management - UV.

Share Files in S3

An AWS tutorial for sharing S3 files with external users by Amber Israelsen .

Book of the Week

This week's book is Scientific Visualization: Python + Matplotlib by Nicolas P. Rougier. As the name implies, the book focuses on data visualization with Python and Matplotlib. The book dives into the foundations of data visualizations and covers topics such as:

  • Coordinate system
  • Scaling and projection
  • Setting layout
  • Animation
  • 3D graphs
  • Showcases

Thanks to the author, the book has an open online version:

The book has a printed version, and it is available to purchase on Amazon:
