The living room is one of the most important rooms in the home. It is the first room that we step into when we come back from work, school or being out and about.

The living room is also the place for family gatherings and celebrations, and a place where we spend a considerable amount of time for entertainment, relaxation and socialising.

The living room is also important because this is where we receive and entertain guests.

When visitors come into our living room, they are inevitably confronted with our taste in style as they naturally begin to observe everything in our living room. What they see tells them a lot about us.

It is, therefore, very important for us to pay very close attention to the layout and décor of our living room. It should be specially designed for relaxation and comfort, and to make a very good first impression when guests come into our home.

The following trending ideas will influence the designing of the living room in 2021 and try to fulfill all the functions that the living room is meant to serve:

?  The living room in 2021 will be designed to have a considerable amount of light and space. Much of the light will be natural light coming into the living room through large windows.

?  An open floor plan will be in vogue as designers recommend that the living room be merged, for instance, with the kitchen. With more people working from home, the living room could also be merged with a dedicated workspace.

?  Minimalism will continue to take centre stage in the designing process

?  Eco-friendly materials will be used for making furniture and decorations

?  A preference for light and cream colours will dominate colour schemes for living rooms in the coming year. In this regard, white, grey and beige will be the leading colours of choice for painting walls. These walls can then be contrasted with more vigorously coloured furniture and decorations.

?  The mixing together of various styles will be a hallmark of living room designs in 2021

Living Room Design Trends for 2021

Eclecticism

In 2021, the living room is going to frequently feature the combination of different styles. Different types of furniture and decorations, along with different colour schemes, will be brought together in one living room.

Eclecticism will not be easy to achieve; however, if done with proper attention to detail, the end result can be aesthetically appealing.

In this design trend, it will be possible, for instance, to combine vintage items with modern furniture, or the Scandinavian design style with the loft design style.

Minimalism

Minimalism has become the buzzword in modern design. Its central features include spacious rooms, large windows, and a lot of light.

Furnishings and decorations are at a bare minimum, hence there is a lack of ostentation. However, this can be made up for by the use of expensive furniture and materials.

The walls are painted with solid colours. There are little or no patterns on walls or on wall papers.

The finishing materials of choice include such things as plastic, glass, chrome or ceramic.

Eco-Friendly Living Rooms

Environmentally-friendly designs have continued to grow in popularity ever since their advent over a decade ago. The proclivity towards this design trend has thus far shown no signs of waning, and so it is predicted to feature prominently in the coming year.

The living room will continue to see natural materials and natural colours on display. It will also see more and more indoor plants and gardens.

It will not be unusual to see climbing plants such as ivy on walls.

Popular natural materials will include stone, wood and rattan.

In keeping with eclecticism, we will expect to see such combinations of style as the use of natural lighting and the use of massive chandeliers in the same living room.

Scandinavian

The Scandinavian style of designing living rooms is still popular, and will continue to be so in 2021.

The main features of this style include minimalism, the use of natural materials, elaborate lighting fixtures, simple geometric furniture, and potted plants.

There is a lot of natural lighting that comes into the living room through large windows. These windows could be further decorated using transparent fabric or blinds.

The typical colours used in this style are white, or a combination of white and blue.

Large-Lounge Living Room

The large-lounge living room, otherwise known as the loft living room, typically makes use of a large space. It also employs an open floor plan.

The large space can be zoned using partitions or colour contrasts, which could, for example, be used to separate the workspace or the kitchen from the main part of the living room.

The walls of a loft living room could either be made of bricks, or – in the absence of a brick wall – be covered with a wallpaper depicting brickwork.

The furniture would typically include a large sofa – upholstered in genuine leather or suede – and other articles that would typically be made of industrial equipment parts.

Abstract painting would be a fitting decoration in this sort of living room.

Hi-Tech

The hi-tech living room is for people who are fascinated by the latest technology. Indeed, technology and contemporary designs go well together.

A central feature of this style is the presence of a lot of artificial lighting. The lights could be used for zoning the living room; for instance, unusual lights could be used for separating the workspace from the rest of the living room. We could even use a different colour of light for separating the kitchen from the rest of the living room.

Other features of this style would include the use of glossy ceramic tiles, glass partitions, and transformable furniture.

Neoclassicism

The neoclassical style will be the preference of people who would like to highlight their high social status. It entails the combination of elegance and sophistication.

The furniture will be simple, symmetrical, luxurious but not ostentatious. The furniture will also be largely made of dark wood.

Typical decorations could include beautiful ornaments, large mirrors, flowers, stone and marble floors, and Persian carpets.

The fabrics of choice will include damask, silk, brocade, linen and velvet.

The colour scheme will largely feature such mild colours as cream, grey, blue, yellow and green.
