Introduction
1 John 4:16 (AMP) is a cornerstone scripture that reveals the nature of God and the believer’s relationship with Him. It declares that God is love and calls believers to abide in this truth, living in constant awareness and reliance on His love. This scripture bridges theology and daily living, challenging Christians to embody God’s love in their interactions and choices. For today’s believers, this verse serves as an invitation and a guide. It invites them to trust fully in God’s love and challenges them to reflect it in their lives, transforming relationships and strengthening faith.
Now Let’s Eat Some Meat!
1 John 4:16 (AMP): “We have come to know [by personal observation and experience], and have believed [with deep, consistent faith] the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides continually in him.”
The Deeper Spiritual Revelation in 1 John 4:16
1 John 4:16 encapsulates the essence of God’s nature and His relationship with believers. The declaration that “God is love” goes beyond a mere attribute, identifying love as the core of who God is. This truth carries significant implications for believers, inviting them to both receive and reflect His love. The phrase “we have come to know and have believed” underscores the experiential and ongoing nature of this relationship. Believers are not called to a theoretical understanding of God’s love but to a deeply personal experience of it. God’s Love is an actual force, complete with Power and Abilities, much greater than even Superman’s. LOL
The scripture’s emphasis on “abiding” reveals that living in God’s love requires intentionality and consistency. To abide in love is to remain anchored in God, trusting Him and allowing His love to shape every aspect of life. This abiding relationship is reciprocal, as the verse assures that “God abides continually in him.” This mutual indwelling signifies a deep and unbreakable connection between God and His people.
For modern believers, 1 John 4:16 highlights the transformative power of living in God’s love. It calls Christians to trust in His love during difficulties, to embody it in our actions, and to draw strength from the assurance that His presence is always with us.
Relevance to Today’s Believers
In a world often marked by fear, division, and conditional relationships, 1 John 4:16 offers a life-giving truth: God’s love is unconditional and ever-present. For believers struggling with feelings of low self-esteem, unworthiness or doubt this scripture affirms that God’s love is not based on our performance but on His nature. And that we are worthy of His love, not because of anything we do, simply because He says so. And anyone worthy of the Love of God, has no reason to feel unworthy, or doubtful, or have feelings of low self esteem, after all, you are worthy of the Love of The Creator.
It challenges Christians to move beyond a surface-level faith and to develop a deep, experiential trust in His love.
This scripture also serves as a call to action. As recipients of God’s love, believers are charged to reflect it in our relationships, choosing kindness, forgiveness, and selflessness. The mutual abiding described in this verse assures believers that we are never alone; God’s love sustains and empowers us in every circumstance. For modern Christians, living in the reality of God’s love transforms our approach to challenges, relationships, and faith.
Supporting Scriptures
1 John 4:18 (AMP): “There is no fear in love [dread does not exist]. But perfect (complete, full-grown) love drives out fear, because fear involves [the expectation of divine] punishment, so the one who is afraid [of God’s judgment] is not perfected in love [has not grown into a sufficient understanding of God’s love].”
This verse complements 1 John 4:16 by illustrating the power of God’s love to banish fear and provide security. Notice, here Power is an effective power capable of producing an end result.
John 15:9-10 (AMP): “I have loved you just as the Father has loved Me; remain in My love [and do not doubt My love for you]. If you keep My commandments and obey My teaching, you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in His love.”
Jesus’ words here echo the call to abide in love, connecting it to obedience and trust.
Romans 8:38-39 (AMP): “For I am convinced [and continue to be convinced—beyond any doubt] that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present and threatening, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the [unlimited] love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
This scripture assures believers of the unshakable nature of God’s love, reinforcing the truth of His abiding presence. I could write forever and not be able to express the profoundness of this? scripture. The Creator and Sustainer of the universe, loves us so much, so deeply, so thoroughly? that nothing (since He created everything) can separate us from His love. Selah.
Ephesians 3:17-19 (AMP): “So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through your faith. And may you, having been [deeply] rooted and [securely] grounded in love, be fully capable of comprehending with all the saints (God’s people) the width and length and height and depth of His love [fully experiencing that amazing, endless love]; and that you may come to know [practically, through personal experience] the love of Christ which far surpasses [mere] knowledge [without experience], that you may be filled up [throughout your being] to all the fullness of God [so that you may have the richest experience of God’s presence in your lives, completely filled and flooded with God Himself].”
This scripture emphasizes the experiential and transformative aspects of God’s love, echoing 1 John 4:16. Ask yourself this, what would it be like to say that you, your life, and your experiences are completely filled and infolded with God Himself? This prayer scripture is for you to achieve that.?
I suggest you read and meditate on Ephesians 3:14-21 (AMP): "For this reason [grasping the greatness of this plan by which Jews and Gentiles are joined together in Christ] I bow my knees [in reverence] before the Father [of our Lord Jesus Christ], from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name [God—the first and ultimate Father]. May He grant you out of the riches of His glory, to be strengthened and spiritually energized with power through His Spirit in your inner self, [indwelling your innermost being and personality], so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through your faith. And may you, having been [deeply] rooted and [securely] grounded in love, be fully capable of comprehending with all the saints (God’s people) the width and length and height and depth of His love [fully experiencing that amazing, endless love]; and [that you may come] to know [practically, through personal experience] the love of Christ which far surpasses [mere] knowledge [without experience], that you may be filled up [throughout your being] to all the fullness of God [so that you may have the richest experience of God’s presence in your lives, completely filled and flooded with God Himself].Now to Him who is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly more than all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever. Amen."
Galatians 5:22-23 (AMP): “But the fruit of the Spirit [the result of His presence within us] is love [unselfish concern for others], joy, [inner] peace, patience, [not the ability to wait, but how we act while waiting] kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
God’s love, abiding in believers, manifests as tangible fruit in our lives or results, shaping our character, decisions, and actions. Again, God’s Love IS a powerful force, capable of producing results! Even to the creation of something where there was nothing.
