Living with purpose
When I lost my purpose

Living with purpose

In summer 2018, my daughter had just turned 1 and I’d finally started to catch up on sleep.?

My wife was feeling better, the night feeds had stopped and we started to feel ourselves again. Thinking about the future felt good.?

Only, there was a problem: I’d lost my purpose.?

Of course, being a parent to our wonderful little girl was a purpose in itself but what was I actually doing with my career? What would I tell her that Daddy did with his life?

He had ambitions but just fell into a life of mediocrity... No thanks.

I couldn’t get going in the morning. Work had become uninspiring, I didn’t find it enjoyable anymore.?It was tough.?

This was one of the scariest periods of my life.?

I’d worked in recruitment for over 8 years, it was all I’d ever known in the professional world.?

I was good at it. I’d been successful, earned good money, set myself up for the future. Yet something still wasn’t right and I couldn’t put my finger on it.?

Every day felt like a battle and I became paranoid.?

I would question whether my team liked me, over and over. Did I say that right, do they still respect me? Doest my face fit in with the Directors??

Doubting my every move would stress me out. Then this led to sleep deprivation.

And this time it wasn’t my daughter’s fault!

It was mine. And the scariest thing was feeling like I had no way out of this dilemma.

We spend most of our waking lives at work, away from our families. And if that one thing has lost its point, lost its excitement, then it's not good.

It took me another 2 years to do something about my lack of purpose.

I read books, I spoke to others, I enrolled in a Life Coaching course.?

A Career Coach would've enabled me to control the ‘lost years to get to my purpose. I would’ve jumped at the opportunity to talk through my problems if I had known this.?

Now I am one of these Coaches and I use my story to help guide others in the same situation.?

Everyone should have a purpose in life.

And if you’ve lost why you’re doing what you’re doing, don’t waste time. Get the help you need to move your life forward.?

It’s worth it.?
