Living with Purpose

As I contemplate the chaos seen in the world today, I often ponder on the following items:
“The ends justify the means” often leads down a path of self-destruction whereby one becomes the very thing they fear and hate the most. The world seems to forget that hate begets hate, violence perpetuates violence, war foments wars, etc..
Unfortunately, the loud, vitriol, screaming fringes receive the attention while neither represent the whole. This seems to be exacerbated by the fact that many are now able to maintain anonymity while planting seeds of discord everywhere they go.
Instead of falling prey to this contention, let us take a better path and mirror the examples of people like Martin Luther King Jr who said, “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend;” or Mahatma Gandhi who said, “There is more to life than simply increasing its speed;” or Mother Theresa who described her life work by saying, “I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God Who is sending a love letter to the world.”
Can we say likewise? Do we have a vision and mission for our life? Are we living a life worth emulating? Are we laying a solid foundation that will result in a bright future for our children?
To the undecided, distracted, or those struggling to navigate through life: Do not lose hope! Establish your personal mission and vision statements, rise up and act accordingly. What we say and do matters and will leave a lasting mark on others - determine now what type of mark that should be.
Twenty-five years ago, while serving a two year mission in Chile Antofagasta, I contemplated my own vision and mission in life. From that detailed analysis I created a "Creed" that I have tried to live by and help direct many of the decisions I make.
I cautiously share this to assist you in the development of your own personal statements and goals. Cautiously because it means a great deal to me and opens me up to ridicule - "Why are you posting this on a business social networking site?" I believe that whether for business or personal life, these guiding principles are important. Furthermore, the time for silence has passed, "All that is necessary for evil to succeed is that good men do nothing" (attributed to Edmund Burke).
Here is an excerpt of what I wrote October 21, 1995:
We will build a righteous family where there are no empty chairs.
- God's kingdom first! I will magnify my callings and witness of Christ at all times. I will not shrink from my duties.
- I will uplift others so they may realize their potential as children of God.
- I will keep my dealings with mankind pure and exhibit integrity in all I do.
- I will live to make all free.
- I will nourish my soul through proper diet and exercise, prayer, scripture study, fasting, pondering, and service.
- I will give recognition to those whom it rightfully belongs and reflect all glory and honor to my Father in Heaven; without Him, I am nothing!
- I will be one who can always profess, "My confidence is waxed strong in the presence of God."
Now my friends, it is your turn. Rise and shine. Make a positive difference in the world. Rejoice in our differences and remind the world what it means to love, serve, and live a purpose driven life.
Your efforts are desperately needed and do not go unnoticed!
