Living on Prana to save Forests and Climate?
70% of World Deforestation comes from planting crops for the meat industry, beef in particular. To achieve the Paris Agreement, US Citizens will we have to reduce their individual carbon footprint by 90% and Europeans by 80% in average by 2050 (from 10 to 2 tons of Co2 eq / person / year for French citizens for example).
?Compensating our footprint with tree planting and forest conservation, while it is dearly needed and impactful, won't be enough. That's working on the effects and not the root cause of the problem. It sometimes feels like emptying a bucket while the tap is still full on. To reach a Global Net Zero Carbon equation by 2050, we must reduce first, as the Science Based Targets point out.
How can we achieve that? It seems the root cause of this is in our Mind and Collective Consciousness. ?
There are some positive signals in Society which give us hope for the future.?We observe already a steady reduction in meat consumption in rich countries. We see as well a growing trend for local, seasonal and organic food consumption and growing vegetarian and vegan diets as well, which have much lower carbon and forest footprint. A kilo of local seasonal organic veggies has a carbon footprint 100 times lower than a kilo of beef for example.
?Intermittent fasting is on the rise as well, as it has proven its health benefits. More and more scientific studies are proving that eating less and having lighter and healthier diets is beneficial both for physical and mental health, and the Planet as well. Obesity and overweight are becoming a major Global health issue associated with numerous diseases on one side. On the other extreme, 10 % of the World population is still suffering from hunger.
I have always been puzzled by the story of Christian Saints, Yogi, Jain, Chi-Gong or Taoists masters who had been able to live a healthy life without eating for many years. Beyond these exceptional cases, we can find in the millennial Indian and Chinese medicine heritage, techniques and attitudes to enhance our physical, emotional and spiritual health, by eating less. Progressively by fasting for specific periods of time, until it can become permanent for some. The underlying concept behind it, is that we are in capacity to source-feed ourselves directly from the vital energy present in us and everywhere around us. Indians call it Prana, Chinese call it the Chi, it is known for thousands of years there. The techniques range from meditation to physical and breathing exercises, yoga, chi-gong,.., and adopting a virtuous life. Being compassionate, living with moderation, and adopting positive thoughts, speech and action, to summarize.
All this seems pretty esoteric to a vast majority of the Western World. It is interesting to note though, that medical studies have been done on some of these subjects, which were validating that indeed they were not eating, for some of them not even drinking, while their weight was stable.
?On the Scientific front, quantum physics for example, opened our mind on a new reality of what we really are. Beyond what we see as our physical body, when we look into the atoms, we realized we are made of an electro-magnetic field of photons, neutrons and electrons and 99.9999999 % emptiness. So, beyond our physical body, we are an energy body, like a battery. Same is the Earth and any living being or plant or any Planet in the Cosmos. We learned as well that this electro-magnetic field is unified and totally interdependent. We are One, to summarize.

It is estimated that we use 5 to 10 % of our Brain capacities today. What if by developing our Brain and expanding our consciousness we could develop these new capacities to feed ourselves directly from the electro-magnetic field? ?What and how we think influences greatly our body and health. Could it be that we could regulate our hunger and needs with our mind?
Could it be that we are conditioned to eat three meals a day but that we could actually live better, longer and happier with just one light meal a day, and reduce our predation of Nature by 50 or 90% as needed? This could apply not only to food but as well to all our consumption footprint, by reducing our greed and desires, which is another outcome of living from Prana apparently.
The perspective to live partially or fully on Prana, while very long term, opens a World of possibilities if it's true. To reduce our footprint on climate and forests, to adapt to climate change, to improve our health and well-being, and, maybe as well, to help people who are starving in Sahel to source-feed from Prana to reduce hunger. I am not advocating here for anybody to stop eating and try to turn into a Sadhu in a Himalayan cave overnight. It's not possible and dangerous.
And you, what is your own feeling of these stakes? Shall we praise or jail the people advocating for fasting and source-feeding? ?Could we find a middle way, one day, where we eat and consume less, for improved Human well-being and Planet health?
It's March 21st today, which marks the return of Spring and the World Forest Day.
I wish you all a beautiful Spring, an amazing Forest Day, and..
Bon Appetit!

1 年Spot on Tristan Lecomte - fully aligned. I turned vegetarian about 8 years ago for the sustainability reasons you highlighted and I’ve also been doing intermittent fasting. Never felt better ??

1 年The Cartesian vision of the world has shaped the ecocidary anthropocentrism that today puts the forests and the planet in danger. Thank you Tristan for opening our minds to other ways of seeing the world. The Indian prana, the ecocentrism of indigenous peoples, and various spiritualities invite us more than ever to adopt, in food and in many other segments of our lives (consumption, travel, relationship to time...), a simpler and happier relationship to the world. This is the key.
