Living in Infinity, RIP Kelly Stites, Defining Home, Remembering to be Thankful
"There are infinite numbers between 0 and 1. There's .1 and .12 and .112 and an infinite collection of others. Of course, there is a bigger infinite set of numbers between 0 and 2, or between 0 and a million. Some infinities are bigger than other infinities. A writer we used to like taught us that. There are days, many of them when I resent the size of my unbounded set. I want more numbers than I'm likely to get, and God, I want more numbers for Augustus Waters than he got. But, Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn't trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I'm grateful."
Monday 6:00 a.m.; a full day of work after a fun weekend of play. Our friends the Schnell Family left yesterday at 5:00 p.m., my Queen, our kid, and I all jumped in a bean bag turned on a foreign film and began dozing. We were off to bed by 9:00 p.m. I got an amazing night of rest, and thus I’m ready to take on the day.
We promised the visiting family a deer show, but until yesterday, they only came when we were not home, but yesterday morning we had 2 bucks and about 7 ladies and kids show up to dance around, it’s mating season, so everyone is happy, well some of the ladies were a little skittish, but overall we had about an hour of majestic animals prancing around no more than 5 feet from our deck.
It's almost Thanksgiving, can you believe it, the year is flying by, I do think the older we get, the faster time moves, as a child I would swear that algebra class lasted 8 hours, but the clock only moved an hour, today a month seems like a day and a day like an hour. Thanksgiving is a time to spend with families, give love, get love, and say those things we need to say every day but somehow get too busy.
I got word that an old friend lost his life yesterday. He was 55 years old, was driving to I assume to go hunting, and had a heart attack and passed in an automobile accident. Our families have been intertwined for years, another example of someone gone too soon, we never know when our time is up, live every day as if it’s your last. RIP Kelly Stites. Keep the Stites family in your thoughts, the next few days, weeks, months, and years will be hard without “Stites” around to rib and get ribbed.
I was asked the other day where I call home. It’s an interesting question; home will always be Beautiful Parker City, Indiana. But today I have three places I call home, Indianapolis, Denver, and Morrison. They each have their benefits and downsides, but I believe that we can be a part of multiple communities, engaging in each as time allows.
If you only have one home, count your blessings, life is much easier with one home. All of your belongings are there, you need not wonder where that jacket is, or that pair of shoes, you have one place and one place only. Multiple homes mean 3 of everything, and to this day, I have many items I have no idea as to where they are. Favorite shirts and jeans that just seem to be lost in one of our three dryers.
I’m blessed, I am not complaining, but I think some times we look at others and believe we want their life. I promise you every life has hurdles, hidden pain, and demons that need to be controlled. Never want for another's life, you have your own, make it the best you can and know that the other lives you covet probably are more trouble than they appear. “Be yourself; everyone else is taken.” – Wilde
The sun is coming up; I wish I had the words to describe what I see when visiting our mountain home, the morning band of light, the sun peaking out, starting each day with a light show that no band could ever match. Nature is a gem we all seem to take for granted; I think we take a lot for granted until it’s too late.
That’s my want for you today, to look at people, places, and things and take a moment of appreciation. Your life is full of beautiful nouns, and many times we get caught up in the daily grind we forget to say thank you for our amazing world. As you are driving to your place of employment or your many meetings, simply say thank you out loud. We don’t give enough thanks for our world, and with a holiday built around that once concept, this word soup is to remind you to appreciate every breath you take.
Give thanks for your family, your friends, your hobbies, your health, and all those things you forget to say thank you for. As humans we have been given an amazing gift of life, love, and happiness and although there is pain, the light always erases the darkness. Your life is a series of days with lightness, darkness, storms, and perfect weather.
That’s all this man has in his heart and mind; maybe you got a nugget, maybe you're wondering why you took the time to read these 900 or so words. But you did, and I thank you for the time, I can now move on and get to work, my mind is cleansed of the thoughts that flooded in as I sat down to type. I encourage you to find a way to clear your mind before starting your day, meditation, prayer, writing, are ways to empty the mind and prepare for the coming day. I hope this message finds you well; I’m the most blessed man you will meet today. I thank the Universe for placing allowing me to be me and you to be you. There is room here for all of us.
