Living On A Green Grid.

Living On A Green Grid.

A glimpse into what you can start planning for, with wheeling

Our future may be uncertain, but our choices aren’t. Private companies are spearheading the adoption of renewable energy by creatively using the available technology to meet their needs. One of the things we've learned is that project results exceed client expectations when we collaborate with them to understand their needs and businesses.? Wheeling, on the other hand, necessitates a change in thinking as there is no time to waste. While not everything is available right away, we are willing to work with you now to assist your business in reaching its sustainability goals and reducing its energy consumption.

In this article, we will cover,

  • Scaling SA with wheeling
  • Modernising Eskom with wheeling
  • Achieving your clean goals with wheeling

Scaling SA’s economy with wheeling

While a centralised power utility and economies of scale are good when things work efficiently, having a single source of power is problematic, SA requires more! Allowing multiple private generators to enter the market creates competition, meaning lowered prices. Furthermore, our economy will grow quicker the more energy South Africa has. With this introduction, we’re painting the picture of how the future of SA could look. But you must be a risk taker, with us together.?

At Fibon, we enjoy taking risks. When it comes to processes, we always advance. Although not everything is clear, we will make do with what is at hand and make sure that it is. This is the framework that we have chosen. Being dynamic, agile, and practical keeps you ahead of innovation and above the turbulence - something SA is looking for.

The wheeling of electricity allows a private enterprise to rapidly build the generation capacity that South Africa needs to grow its economy. The removal of red tape for private generations has opened the door for the private sector to assist in solving the current energy deficit in our country.? One benefit of renewable energy generation is the speed at which it can be deployed versus traditional generation technologies such as coal or nuclear. These benefits mean that the uptake of wheeled power by commercial and industrial companies can go a long way in rapidly improving the current energy challenges and in so doing also improve the economic outlook of our country. This is great for the planet and for the bottom line.

Modernising Eskom with wheeling

Wheeling, on the other hand, does not imply Eskom's demise; rather, it reinvents its role. When you wheel, a fee is paid for each kWh wheeled through the Eskom or municipal network. It is an excellent business model for the utility because they are compensated for maintaining the transmission and distribution networks, which are critical to their operations and survival. Eskom has said that it urgently needs an extra 4000–6000 MW of generation capacity for electricity provision, combined with its expedited maintenance program, to lower the risk of load shedding. Wheeling might be wonderful news for our economy, given that load shedding cost South Africa's GDP almost 2% in 2020.?

With such a fantastic solution, we’re seeing how the energy market is becoming privatized and wheeling is a mechanism to enable that. It will not delete ESKOM, but instead upgrade the type of energy we use in homes, businesses, and other settings. The proposed unbundling of Eskom into Generation, Transmission and Distribution entities holds many benefits for the country. It is expected that this unbundling will assist in allowing greater access to the national grid by Independent Power Producers. With more competition coming into the energy space, we can expect the price of energy to stabilize and possibly even reduce over time. More energy at better pricing creates an environment for businesses to thrive and be more competitive.?

To achieve this, Eskom would need to invest in improving the quality of the national grid and improving its transmission capacity to allow more access to the grid by independent Power Producers. Eskom has an important role to play in creating and maintaining the infrastructure needed to connect new generations to the system.

Achieving your clean goals with wheeling

A third-world nation gets involved with first-hand innovation

Solar resources are abundant in South Africa, in fact, one of the highest in the world. Three things are expected from solar power: reliability, clean energy, and affordability. And with Wheeling coming into play, private generators and purchasers will join forces and improve how our electricity is made, used, and shared across the grid. The modern compass of the nation is now Wheeling, and we're looking forward to finding out what this means for the future of industries.?

  • For the Automotive Manufacturing Industry, decarbonizing the grid means electric cars would become emission-free, and not rely on fossil fuels to power up.?
  • For Private Sector Companies, Wheeled power not only allows businesses to reduce their input costs but achieve their green energy targets should they not have enough space to install their own generation capacity.?
  • For Residential Complexes, Wheeled power has the capacity to provide residential complexes with power during peak periods by giving them access to other renewable sources such as wind power.

To conclude

The national power structure of South Africa is undoubtedly in poor shape. However, the solar sector is ripe with business opportunities, and the government is embracing the trend with legislation to lower the cost of solar access through existing infrastructure. By combining privatized and public companies and putting a strong emphasis on long-term solutions, which is something we're very focused on, it's not just another solution to another problem; it's a solution that unites the country.

How is the unbundling of Eskom going? I haven’t seen much published besides the 150-billion allocation 2-3 years ago.
