In living color: 3D IS better than 2D
I went to my office yesterday for the first time since March 2020. We had a company picnic in the parking lot of our building with a food truck – Philly cheesesteaks and all – and an ice cream truck. Yum!
It was AMAZING to see people. It felt as if we had all walked out of an animated movie to become the three-dimensional beings we actually are. It was better than I anticipated and not just because of the ice cream truck.
I met people I had never met in person before and have only seen on Zoom. Some were shorter than I imagined, some taller.
I’m a creature of habit and since March 2020 my habit has been to stay at home and not see people. But, I like people and this was a good reminder. I was happy to see everyone!!
I’m what’s called an ambivert – every personality test I take I hover on the border between introvert and extrovert. I do like my quiet time but I also get energy from being around people and this is what happened yesterday.
I confirmed my ambivert status at a quiz by Adam Grant, whose work I follow and really like. He writes about the workplace and is just spot on in his observations. (Link for quiz in comments)
The quiz talks about ambiverts’ skills in sales and leadership roles. I particularly like the last line which I can see myself in, “...express sufficient assertiveness and enthusiasm needed…”
“Where do ambiverts shine? It turns out that ambiverts often achieve greater sales productivity than extroverts or introverts. Ambiverts are more inclined to listen to customers’ interests and less vulnerable to appearing too excited or overconfident, tendencies that can also make them highly effective in leadership roles. And because ambiverts naturally engage in a flexible pattern of talking and listening, they’re likely to express sufficient assertiveness and enthusiasm needed to close a sale.”
Only after seeing everyone in 3D do I realize how much I’ve missed this during the pandemic. Today, I’m back to 2D and it’s not quite the same.
Are you an introvert or an extrovert? How has that played out with your choices during the pandemic?

3 年Surprised I'm still an introvert according to this... I'm probably more like you Michelle an ambivert
I think I might be an ambivert! I've always thought of myself as an introvert, but I do get energy from people. I'll check out Adam Grant's work. Thanks!

3 年Interesting! I am pretty sure I'd still score extrovert - but parts of me also like to listen in, be quiet in the back. I love to be around people though, but the pandemic I've been surprisingly OK this couldn't be - so I took 2D as the closest to best I could get. I did start to reach out and find new ways to network though - and Lunchclub is possibly my favorite for that.

3 年I'm also an ambivert. During the Pandemic, I've sought out small groups such as my GoGodone and my running group to help fill that need to be with people. Videos have been a gamechanger for meetings and just to connect with friends and families. The few times that I've gone out I've felt like a kid on the loose in a candy store. That has been my cue that I actually miss going out, out. ??
