Living the Blue Color Syndrome
My post titled “My Blue Journey” enjoyed a good number of significant comments that kept my mind engaged. Whenever the word blue popped up it caught my attention.
I started to wonder why a mi experiencing this? I searched for an explanation. I found it. It is the blue color syndrome.
The Urban dictionary defines this syndrome as the act of seeing or hearing something and then suddenly seeing it everywhere. You buy a?blue car, and suddenly you notice?blue cars?everywhere. This is?blue color syndrome.
It turns out this syndrome has many impacts on our lives. Our tendency to focus our attention on something leads us to filter out any information that is not pertinent to what occupies our minds.
Kodak Company focused its attention on improving the classical camera. It passed the opportunity to develop the electronic camera. I find this relevant to the tunneling effect.
Being aware of something new like self-discovery of a new talent might lead also to the blue color syndrome.
Marketing campaigns on a certain brand may lead to the same effect. Buy a black-colored car is an example of this.

Being hungry propel us to think about eating and pay little attention to the quality of food that we eat.
Nagging wives maybe affected by this bias. They see an item in certain color and they want it. They may too experiencing the blue color syndrome.
We all experienced this blue syndrome with Covid- 19. Because our minds were focusing on this horrible virus we tended to think that even an ordinary cold is an attack by the wicked virus. We tended to filter out information that is irrelevant to the virus.
We decide to buy something it occupies our minds and tend to see the item selectively everywhere. It was there before but it was not of interest to us and so paid no attention to it.
An author who writes on one subject may only notice similar publications as if this subject is the only one of interest to the readers.
One bias leads to another. Focusing bias or frequency bias leads to confirmation bias. Is confirmation??bias a form of the blue color syndrome? I think so.

2 年Ali Anani, PhD: I must say that you have a gift of making complex ideas not only simple to understand but also memorable and fun to read. When I started reading your article, the equivalent idea that came to my mind is the human Reticular Activating System (RAS) that is frequently mentioned in relation to marketing campaigns. Unlike the "serious" concept of the Reticular Activating System, the concept of the "Blue Color Syndrome" is easier to understand as well as fun to apply and extend. In fact, I'm thinking of designing and performing a magic trick called the "Blue Color Syndrome." As mentioned in your above posting, the Blue Color Syndrome brings into discussion not only the activation of our senses to objects of vital interest but also our natural "inattention blindness" and filters. The latter refers to our natural inclination to ignore, filter out, or neglect objects that we consider as not vital to our short-term objective or interest. And again, the field of magic (conjuring) provides a lot of examples where performers can deliberately use the Blue Color Syndrome to their advantage. In conclusion, I'd say thanks for activating our Reticular Activating System on the important topic of the Blue Color Syndrome.

2 年Stop! The events you are experiencing are receiving inputs from your five senses while at the same time the brain is attempting to find similar experiences and attach to the what the senses are experiencing. Stop and watch this phenomena and how emotions get attached and maybe a previous bias gets reinforced or a brand new one emerges. I have enjoyed watching faces when biases get touched. It's like an algorithm has been started and the processing is at hyper speed. The 75 or so face muscles can't hid the brains archival bias retrieval process. We are all programmers. Each day we experience life by living out old code or writing new. The brain uses these codes to assist in our survival. Our brain first tests the environment for what will eat me and begins going down the biases until i say "Hello, Nice to meet you." Amazingly if we lack code on the experience or event our brain treats it as a leaf floating through the air, we pretty much ignore. This is why empathy has become a major word in our current lexicon. We might be ignoring the right things while developing biases of truth around the wrong things. That's a can of worms. Knowing how the brain stores can help us look in the mirror with executive thinking.
