LivePBL DEEP Method
Direction, Education, Event, Project @ Live Project-Based Learning
LivePBL is pleased to announce its training method called the DEEP Method.
The continuous development of learning theories reflects the emerging changes in social needs, the application of technological advancements in education, and our understanding of teaching and learning methods. Among many educational strategies, Project-Based Learning (PBL) stands out in student-centred teaching and learning practices. However, like any teaching and learning method, PBL has its limitations, necessitating innovations like the LivePBL DEEP method to address these challenges and bridge the gap between theory and practice.
1.??? Philosophical Aspects of Learning Theories and The Limitations
Philosophies of learning theories, including traditional learning theories such as behaviourism, cognitivism, and constructivism, significantly influence teaching and learning practice. However, each theory has its limitations. ?Cognitivism addresses this by considering how information is processed but may overlook the social and contextual factors affecting learning, often neglecting the interactions with external social and technological learning environments. ?Behaviourism focuses on observable behaviours and external reinforcements, often ignoring the internal cognitive processes behind learning. Constructivism, while emphasising that learners acquire knowledge through experience or construct knowledge themselves, often underestimates the need for guidance in complex subject knowledge and information landscapes.
2.??? Challenges of PBL (Project-Based Learning)
PBL, rooted in constructivist principles, engages individuals by reflecting on real-world problems and fosters learning through project implementation and participation. Despite its advantages in fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and engagement, PBL faces several challenges:
Engaging in the real world is not easy
PBL lacks effective methods to connect a broad range of learning experiences, including those based on social, vocational and professional roles, with the acquisition of relevant, specific knowledge and skills. This challenge stems from the need to ensure that PBL not only involves students in meaningful, real-world problems but also equips them for their future careers. Addressing this requires a detailed approach that integrates diverse learning outcomes into the PBL framework.
Resource-intensive bottlenecks
Effective PBL requires intensive resources, including time, materials, and teacher expertise, which may not always be readily available in all educational settings.
Difficulties in assessment
Traditional assessment methods often fail to capture the depth of learning and skill development in PBL, making it challenging to accurately assess student performance.
Inconsistencies in team implementations
Often lacking a clear framework, PBL can be difficult to implement consistently, leading to diverse student experiences and outcomes and making it difficult to accumulate experiential knowledge.
3.??? The LivePBL DEEP Method: A New Approach to Bridge Theory and Practice
The LivePBL DEEP method is constructed to address these challenges. DEEP consists of four elements, emphasising the logical steps of Direction, Education, Event, and Project, focusing on how to design projects in PBL, enhancing the role-based agent unity between educational theory and practical application, rather than a top-down linear simple method from theory to practice. This not only addresses the limitations of applying existing learning theories in education but also enhances the efficiency and quality of the project-based learning methodology.

3.1 Direction
The direction element in DEEP provides a clear direction for learning, ensuring that projects are aligned with educational goals and the relevance of the real world. This strategic focus helps overcome the directionless exploration often seen in traditional constructivist settings, ensuring that learning is goal-orientated.
3.2 Education
The education element in DEEP follows direction with a commitment to education that is both deep and broad, encompassing not only academic content but also essential 21st-century skills. This approach addresses the limitations of cognitivism and constructivism by ensuring that learners critically and contextually engage with content.
3.3 Event
The event element in DEEP ensures that education is dynamic and capable of responding to the changing world by incorporating events into the learning process. This aspect leverages social and contextual learning opportunities often overlooked by traditional theories, making learning more relevant, engaging, and attractive.
3.4 Project
Finally, the project element in DEEP calls for designing project-based learning through an integrated approach to project design and execution. This structure addresses common challenges in project-based learning, such as resource allocation and assessment, by providing clear guidance and tools for effective project management.
4.??? Main Goals of the LivePBL DEEP Method
1)??? Enhance engagement and relevance in education: By linking projects with real-world events and challenges, this method aims to increase student engagement and make learning more relevant.
2)??? Facilitate skill development in learners: This method focuses on developing a wide range of skills from critical thinking to collaboration, with learners participating in constructing projects, and educators exploring and observing with them at every project stage to meet their holistic needs.
3)??? Promote consistency in teamwork and quality of project implementation: Through its structured framework, the DEEP method seeks to ensure consistent implementation of PBL, leading to high-quality educational experiences.
4)??? Integrate formal and informal learning environments: A core goal of the LivePBL DEEP method is to blur the boundaries between formal educational settings (such as classrooms and institutions) and informal educational settings (such as community projects, online platforms, and internships). This integration aims to provide learners with a more diverse and comprehensive educational journey by leveraging the unique advantages of both contexts, enriching the learning experience.
Promote lifelong learning and adaptability: The method aims to lay the foundation for lifelong learning by emphasising adaptability and the ability to learn at all stages of life. This goal recognises the importance of continuous education beyond formal school settings, preparing individuals to adapt to change and pursue personal and professional growth opportunities.
In summary, the LivePBL DEEP method represents a significant advancement in educational methodology, designed to overcome the limitations of traditional theories and practices. By bridging the gap between theory and practice, it provides a solid framework for engaging, relevant, and effective learning.
