In what world do I want to live? For a few moments I imagined that I could put the words back in order and pretended that I was living a nightmare. Or I wished this was an event that could be fixed with a bit of time and that maybe one day we could all forget about it.
As of today (March 21, 2020 - the beginning of the spring) we have Covid-19 confirmed cases in 172 countries, over 13,000 deaths and many serious cases everywhere. Over the last few days I asked myself a few times if the world was falling apart. One week ago in Spain, where I live, the lifestyle has radically shifted with the imposition of "social distancing", partially following the Chinese model. Unemployment and economic depression are going to take a big toll to our lives. People in other countries that are very dear to me such as Argentina, Brazil, Italy and the USA are living under very similar restrictions. When I speak to my family and friends we can relate to each other and understand how challenging it is for all of us. We are all coming together and want to get closer to feel stronger.
In the age where everything happens in "real-time" globally, this virus is taking its path slowly but surely. It perpetrates everywhere across gender, ages, classes, religions and cultures. With some people it manifests vigorously and with other will stay quiet but ready to move somewhere else. Despite the time that it allowed us in Europe to take actions, our societies reacted first in denial and then were unprepared to deal with this giant molecular disease. It can be as violent as a cat-5 strong hurricane, too big to control and with an unpredictable path. It is silent, however, but equally deadly.
Yesterday I wished that I could just accelerate the clock and wake up again this summer.
But in a few months from now the world will be already very different. It is much better to stay awake, alert and be in control. The long-term ramifications of Covid-19 will likely impact everything we do privately and publicly, socially, politically and economically. It is impossible to create an exhaustive list, it is potentially everything!
We can have control and be active from our homes also during our lockdown. It is about our mindset and attitude. The world can come together for this cause, as it should also for climate change, poverty eradication, food insecurity, human rights, etc.
We owe it to our future, to our children, and to the memory of those that we unfortunately will have lost in the meantime.
