I had the opportunity several years ago to view a wonderful video by a gentleman named Jeffrey Gitomer.? Jeffrey is a well-known speaker and author who did a series of challenges for Success Magazine.? In the video, Jeffrey talks about how we sometimes convince ourselves that life will somehow be more complete “after” a particular event happens.? For example, we believe we will be happier with our lives “after” we get married or “after” we have children.? We may also tell ourselves that life truly begins “after” we land our dream job or house. Or how about life being worth living “after” we get out of debt?? No matter what the “after” may be, they all still end up bringing us to the same place, a place of tremendous injustice.
When we believe life begins “after” certain conditions are met, we are not taking responsibility for our own happiness.? Instead, we are giving that responsibility to a person, place, or thing.? Not only is this unfair it does a tremendous disservice to ourselves.? By not being accountable for where we currently are in our lives we are missing out on a wonderful opportunity for personal growth and development.
It is up to us to experience our best life now.? We must make a daily decision to make it a positive one regardless of life’s challenges.? There will always be obstacles that we will have to overcome.? Sometimes they are quite enormous and maybe even overwhelming.? But despite these difficulties, we can still live in peace, assurance, and love.????
The spirit of “after” is a deliberate trick to keep us bogged down waiting for life to happen when we could live to the fullest.? If we wrap our minds around the tremendous opportunities that exist before us, we will no longer allow ourselves to be victimized by this self-defeating spirit.? We will instead cherish every moment we have been given.? We will not waste our entire lifetimes waiting for certain moments to occur before deciding to enjoy life.? We will no longer relinquish the privilege of living like the amazing individuals we truly are.
