Promoted Argyle's top-scorer took his tally to four goals in five Sky Bet Championship games in the 77th minute when Rovers goalkeeper Aynsley Pears failed to hold Callum Wright's shot to let Hardie sweep home from close range.

In the 80th minute Scottish striker Hardie was instrumental in Argyle's third goal, winning an aerial ball as Pears headed out Argyle keeper Conor Hazard's clearance.

The ball fell to on-loan Wolves midfielder Luke Cundle, on as a second-half substitute, and he deftly lobbed the ball over Pears.

The game turned on its head in the 27th minute when Finn Azaz's deflected shot from outside the penalty area wrongfooted Pears.

Ryan Hedges had the best opportunity to open the scoring for Rovers in the sixth minute after latching on to an incisive pass from striker Sam Gallagher.

Hedges was one-on-one with Hazard but sidefooted wide of the Argyle keeper and the goal from 12 yards out.

In a rare counter-attack, Hardie fired over from range after being teed up by midfielder Adam Randell in the 11th minute.

A minute later Gallagher - who hails from Crediton in Devon - looked set to score with a thumping header from a Hedges cross but Hazard acrobatically turned the ball over his bar.

Argyle finally got a foothold in the match in the 22nd minute with another effective break.

Whittaker put Hardie away down the right and his far-post cross was brilliantly headed downwards and goalwards by incoming winger Bali Mumba.

The young defender is on loan from Tottenham, having left East Lancashire to sign for the Premier League side in the summer.

Phillips enjoyed a remarkable rise at Rovers, initially making his Under-21 debut as a 16-year-old and then stepping up to the first team picture within a year.

He played 14 times in all competitions last season, including eight league appearances as the side narrowly missed out on a play-off spot.

“I am really looking forward to it,” said the towering centre-back. “It is a club I was at since 12 or 13 years old. The club has been massive for me and my development so far as a player.

“It will be really good to go back and see some old faces, see some of the coaching staff who really helped me kick on as a player when I was young, helping me get that move to Tottenham Hotspur.

“It will be great to see them, but ultimately it is a big game for us and I will be fully focused on me, as a Plymouth Argyle player, and making sure we get three points.”

Phillips joined the Pilgrims in January and has made 12 appearances so far under former England Under-20 manager Ian Foster.

“It is a massive game,” he added. “We are in similar positions and three points could really help us in our fight to remain in the Championship, which we fully believe we can do.

“We are remaining positive. We have got 30 points to play for, 10 massive games now and we are taking each game as it comes.

“We are treating each game the same and, more than ever, we need to fight for the three points. As a squad, we fully believe we can do that.”

The youngster knows first-hand how dangerous Sam Szmodics can be but is excited to potentially come up against his former team-mate.

“I am looking forward to playing against him,” Phillips stated. “He has always been a good player, he has always had that ability.

“I know him fairly well, I feel like I can use that against him and hopefully stop him scoring. The partnership I have at the back with (Lewis) Gibson and (Brendan) Galloway is top.

“They are two great defenders and I feel like against any attack, we back ourselves - even against the teams at the top of the league. It is really easy to build a connection with them. From the first game together, we instantly clicked.

“I think we feed off each other really well. Gibson a leader in there, he helps me out quite a lot in the game. He is always talking to me, letting me know and getting me in the right position.

“Brendan has been a really good form recently. He is a top player and has played games at the highest level, and I have learnt a lot of both of them. I can take what I learn from them and bring it into my own game.

“It is always frustrating when you can concede a goal but if you keep a clean sheet like we did against Swansea - we dug in until the end and defended for our lives. The feeling after getting a clean sheet is amazing.

Whilst Galloway would go on to make 21 appearances for the Toffees, the reality is that he failed to establish himself as a regular, and he had unsuccessful loan spells at West Brom and Sunderland before departing on a free transfer in 2019.

After that, the Zimbabwe international signed for Luton Town, but he once again failed to get game time over the next few seasons before departing two years ago.

Galloway would then join Plymouth, and it’s been a move that has revived his career.

The 27-year-old has made over 50 appearances for the Pilgrims, which included helping them to the Championship last season, and he has featured 18 times in the current campaign, where he has generally impressed.

Brendan Galloway transfer latest

And, it seems as though his performances have caught the eye, as The Sun has revealed that three Championship clubs are keeping tabs on Galloway, with his deal at Home Park running out in the summer.

“Brendan Galloway is wanted by Championship trio Coventry, Middlesbrough and Blackburn on a free transfer. the ex-Everton star has held talks with Argyle's second tier rivals who are fighting it out for his services because he is in the final six months of his current deal.

“The Pilgrims have yet to make a new offer for Galloway which could allow the fellow Championship sides to snap up his signature.

Brendan Galloway could be a low-risk move

Galloway’s injury record may put some clubs off, as he hasn’t played as many games as he would’ve wanted at this stage of his career.

But, he is flying right now for Plymouth, and when he is available, he has all the tools you would want from a modern defender, with his athleticism and ability to play out from the back. As well as that, he is versatile in that he could play in a back three, or at left-back if needed.

Therefore, to pick him up on a free transfer could turn out to be a shrewd, low-risk move, and it’s no surprise that there is plenty of interest in the player.

Of course, Plymouth knew this was a possibility, and they will face a challenge to keep him at the club if their rivals formalise their interest with an offer.

Yet, Galloway will recognise that he’s onto a good thing with Plymouth, and there’s no doubt that the past few years will have been the most enjoyable of his career so far.

So, it will be interesting to see how this plays out, but right now his only focus will be on helping Argyle as they look to steer clear of what is shaping up to be a fascinating battle at the bottom of the Championship.

Blackburn have kindly extended these prices to Hornets supporters making the journey to Ewood Park. The Adult ticket price includes a £1 donation to the Blackburn Rovers Community Trust; supporters are politely reminded that the option to donate to our own Watford FC CSE Trust is included in all online ticket transactions.

Ahead of the Blackburn game, Watford supporters are invited to join in with the family-friendly activities available in the Fan Zone area, including festive food and drink stalls. Rovers have also made it their Christmas Jumper Day and are encouraging home supporters to show their colours at the match, so we hope Hornets supporters will share the sentiment.

To recognise the significant journey up to Lancashire, at a time of year with plenty of other distractions and financial commitments, as well as to enable as many supporters as possible to take up these reduced prices and pre-match activities, we’ve cut the price of coach travel for this game to £10.

No reciprocal pricing agreement was reached with Plymouth Argyle, so their standard pricing applies.

The race for the Championship Golden Boot is in the final stretch, with several players battling it out to be the top scorer in the division.

While Aleksander Mitrovic's record of 43 goals in a single campaign looks set to remain for another year, there are still a number of games remaining for players to add to their already impressive tallies.
