They live as they play

They live as they play

There are, say, 150 professional men tennis players capable of winning Wimbledon. They all have great shots. They can hit backhands and forehands, serve & volley. They train hard and they have good coaches. So why is it that there are a small number dominating the major events?

Federer and Nadal have won the last six grand slams between them and realistically there are only a small no of real challengers, Djokovic, Del Potro & Raonic, who may be around for the end of week two of Wimbledon.

The champions live as they play. When they practice, they practice at match intensity. Off the court, they live at match intensity, obsessively looking after their bodies. For example, Djokovic has a  gluten free diet. Federer specifically trains for Wimbledon, to be at his best. Nadal is arguably the fittest player on the circuit. Every detail of their lives is examined to maximise their performance physically.

Mentally The great champions know inside that they can do it. They have a calm and a total focus on the process as they go about their business. They don’t focus on the emotion of winning and losing. They focus on doing the right things more often and assured that when they do, the results will follow.

Think of applying this to your business.  Business owners know what to do, how to do it and they can do it.

As a Business Coach, I spend a lot of time focusing on the mental side of the business. I work with business owners to help them build their mental resilience, recover from the setbacks and get a better balance in life and work. Healthy living is a big part of this process. Preparing yourself physically and mentally for the challenges ahead.

The business owners are not playing Wimbledon, but they are in the business arena. If they can do more of the right things more often, then they grow in confidence and their results improve. Business owners can also ‘live as they play’.

End
