The motto of www.afm.org still holds true for real professional musicians who make their living by playing their music live for fans. When it comes to AirPlay on the radio one has to ask now, what type of Radio? Does it even matter if musicians join a song society any more? It appears the music industry is becoming much more viable for the armchair musician who produces in their basement and defies the entire working of the Industry. It can be done. There are excellent mediums like Reverbnation and other sites where bands can upload their music and have incredible success, even AirPlay established on terrestrial radio. Good example is Dream Aria who are not performing, live and there is no real band but rather an aging song writer who is best behind the scenes working the music and drumming up sales and a buzz just by pounding the social networks and calling radio stations to obtain AirPlay and create their own buzz. This is amazing because it by passes everything that is procedure in the Music Industry to secure mechanicals and Publishing.
It has been my pleasure to recommend Dream Aria to my Broadcast friends and promote them. The band has created momentum and has been ranked number one on Reverbnation for months according to the creator of the group. Even without live performance there is a great buzz going on for this group for perhaps a number of reasons. It's smart to prove your music. So the majors know who to sign . Perhaps it makes sense to ignore the song writing societies, publishing and anything that matters to secure the five sources of Income that Hart Media helps artists to establish in our business management model. Even though you can still join Socan as a song writer and publisher members services at Socan advises song writers there is no need to start your publishing as it's covered under the song registry. You can still join as a publisher but according to members services at Socan there is no need.
Not that we should start a revolution with musicians but perhaps the folks that are playing live and contributing to that scene still frown on artists who create in their basement and never come out of the armchair to perform. Afterall it's a performance based Industry. I know my own formula for recording is to never record anything that I can't play live and I love playing live. You immediately know if the audience likes your material and there's no faking it.
Certainly I have recommended over the past few weeks the wonderful music that Dream Aria has on their Reverbnation account that is ranked number one. It's really incredible when you look at the stats world wide but let's not fool anyone, the band is not performing live and must hold their day jobs to survive. That's normal for most any performer but other bands I've helped like Toney Springer, Pop Cherry and a long list of artists all have regular live performance gigs to stimulate their audience and music. It's tricky to play music live if you're not use to mixing and sound production. It's way different than recording in your basement and hard to reproduce in every setting. For seasoned live performers, usually any AFM member live music is the foundation of what they do. WIld T and the Spirit did their last album live because Toney Springer is a total live performer and he wanted that feel. People love that. The imperfections make it perfect. Toney you may recall played with David Bowie for while and was signed to Warner. When Hart music Business Management help Mr Springer a year or so ago , Toney had done 4 albums over the last twenty years and everyone else owned his music, he didn't have his own sales site. We helped Toney to establish his publishing, his own record label, his survey accounts, digital media feeds service to radio and his own sales site at cdbaby , check his new live album and please buy as it's going directly to the Artist and he owns all of his own material now. What we do from a business standpoint is paramount to your success. Hart Media empowers artists if they allow us.
I'm encouraging Dream Aria to come out and perform live on a regular basis to help stimulate their already great success and I hope it makes sense to them. Artists don't always like taking direction because it's their baby. The ones that do take direction excel quickly and of course all of my peers here in the Broadcast Industry feel the same about live performance . There is no way you want to play a band in your rotation that will never be heard live. Maybe it's all changing to the degree that live performance just won't matter and filling your iPod with tunes is all that will matter. Mind you even though stageit.com takes I think 60 percent of your sales on their live performance app it goes out live to the world and people buy tickets to the event. Sixty percent is steep but it's money you didn't have so forty percent of something you didn't have is good from a bean counters view. www.stagit.com needs to allow for more than half hour increments but it's all good. I'm sure those platforms will flood the net soon because everyone wants to work from home. The Industry is changing fast.According to Donald Passman famed Entertainment lawyer setting up with the proper registry and affilaitions still matters but now it appears many groups are taking the attitude that they'll cross that bridge when they get to it. That makes a business managers job really hectic and difficult as everything has to be back tracked and you can look this up, the black box still exists. It's real my friend. I still think many of the aspects of the Industry will have to remain the same because there are too many people who have set their music up that way accordingly and the majors are still making their money that way. We still rely upon soundscan and Billboard magazine for the stats as programmers and I do also as a Radio Consultant and former factor juror. I don't think Billboard is ready to shut down its charts yet but certainly other charts seem to matter more to the musician who is testing the waters.
Its awesome to know that it's easier to get ones music out there but live music should still rule. VIva Trio a wonderful group of opera singers doing cross over pop has been under my wing for a bit. Viva trio has a great Christmas concert going on live as I compose this. Live is their thing.
Perhaps the main reason for artists to ignore the live scene and some of the business aspects is sheer economics. I wouldn't want to quit a good day job and take a chance on my music unless I knew there was a demand and I could make money . The old saying jumping off the diving board comes into play. Sometimes you just have to believe in yourself and do it but that's when, knowing what I know, having worked in programming and on air in radio and also being a Socan song writer and ascap publisher and Indie record label owner, I'd want to have my business aspect totally in place so that playing live becomes the vehicle to stimulate your five sources of income. Yikes do I or don't I? If you're serious it should work. Actually if you're able to lighten up and always have fun and make sure Business is in order it totally should work. I like making sure all the ducks are lined up in a row before I start things. I was going to say start shooting but that would be a bad one considering my own bands current music to help end gun violence promoting safe communities. www.musicmanagement2016.wordpress.com
Whats really cool is all of these changes will allow Donald Passman to write a ninth book. I can't wait. Donald imparts knowledge gathered over decades as an entertainment lawyer and he's very very good at it. What a smart guy.
So here is to proving music for Broadcasters and an ever changing industry where sometimes the rule is there are no rules, but when all is said and done if you are not generating five sources of income you may need Hart A&R Music Business Management. We are here to help you and guide you through the first maze of registry and affiliations because it's not as easy as one would think to clear an original song globally and also make sure there is no other band operating with the same name or even the same titled song as one would anticipate coming out of the gate.
We will be doing a follow up interview with Socan members Services and ascap and compare the information for you so we can report the current state of affairs in the Business side of the Music Business by Hart Media.
I want to thank all of my Broadcast friends here on linked in and on the social networks for responding to Dream Aria Black Mirror. Don Stagg originator of Dream Aria is convinced he's obtained all of the new rotation solely on his own as he hasn't checked up on anything we have done. That's all good. I'm here to say thank you. Perhaps drop him a line and let him know you did it out of respect for a fellow Broadcaster who recommended the music to his peers in the Industry. Well then they' ll pay for our services. So Thank you. We charge bands a one time fee of five hundred dollars and do twelve affiliations and registries as outlined by Donald Passman plus free promotion and publicity and we show them how to feed to terrestrial radio properly which ends up being about five hundred hours. A dollar an hour. I'm sure I'll have other Broadcasters who will be jealous saying that a dollar an hour is way more than they make. We do it because we love helping people. It's a fun Industry but it has its complications . I've always loved problem solving. I'm curious when things are changing so fast that it's hard to keep track. Gosh write that ninth book Donald. OR perhaps the musicians have decided to write it for us. It' all good. Folks are going to keep making music and other folks will always want to listen and have musical heros. This song writer and broadcaster has been blessed having met and interviewed some of the most famous bands and artists and they even jammed with me and an entire group of well known musicians came and helped me when I broke my back and was learning to walk again. Artists from www.afm.org all came and wrote music with me and performed with me. You can't buy that kind of respect. Guys like Jeff Healey, Danny Marks, David Bowie,Earl Johnson, Cory Manahan, David Gilmour's promo copy of Rattle that lock, Yoko Ono, Andy Ryan, Tommy Rocker, Dave Murphy, Alannah Myles, Toney Springer, Greg Godovitz , Sam Reid Al Connelly and Alan Frew from Glass Tiger, famed producer Michael Jack, Justin Beibers auntie, even President Barack Obama who gave us a White House blog for our Grass Roots Artists www.cdbaby.com/cd/artistsforamerica and so many more all provided this wonderful support to help me get better plus everyone at the AFM Bill Skolonik and I recall the President of Socan Stan Meisner (remember the hit just give me one chance, that was Stan, I love his music and now he's the President of socan, I think unless that has changed too, I did blink my eyes) Stan came to see me when I was well enough to work and was selling music instruments in Barrie Ontario plus so many other people in our business. Everyone has this I'm here to help thread in their being.Well the artists and musicians I know do. We are all full of love, it's really gushy but we write love songs so keep a box of Kleenex handy. It really humbled me and guess what? I got better, well maybe the question is still out. I'm a passionate journalist, visual artist, broadcaster, musician and lover of so many things. I'm so grateful when folks help others folks. It restores ones faith in humanity. I better tell a joke or you'll tear up on me. Where's my good friend Carla Colin's or Steven Wright now. I've still never figured out what to add to powdered water Steve. Vodka?
I always say we are nothing until we have a sense of purpose. My sense of purpose to do music business management came from being a factor juror. I wanted to give everyone their grant money but you can't help everyone. I decided to come and help bands band by band. I know it's a good and right path. Ask anyone we have helped, they are set up properly and for life and just have to follow the same trodden path each time they create a new song. I think Toney Springer has been my fav. So far because it really put his stuff in order and I recall him phoning me one day saying, I'm publishing my new material man this is cool. He's a cool dude. I love Toney. Jeff Healey idolized Toney and followed him to all his gigs. Jeff was a great friend and had asked me long before his passing if I could help Toney. I guess you know what my answer was. God bless Jeff Healey.
stay tuned for our update on the workings of the music industry.
Most of all, Thank you for your support of open eye universe as much of that material was created in David Bowie's online gallery for fun experiments and David is gone in body, thank you for supporting Dream Aria. Let's make them a wonder. Thanks to my songwriting peers and societies and programmers giving us a chance to please your audience and create a pay check. Thank you for supporting my recommendations as a Radio consultant. Oddly enough my mother Broadcaster Terry Hart taught me piano and radio. She would expect me to help others. It's the way she raised myself and my brothers. Many blessings to one and all.
