Poland is one of my favorite countries—the food, people and culture are fantastic. If you go, put on your agenda to visit the Wieliczka Salt Mine in southern Poland. Salt was mined there from the 13th century until a few years ago. The miners, to entertain themselves and to be able to worship, carved out of the rock salt dozens of statues and four chapels. The salt is gray, not white in color and resembles granite. The most famous area to visit is the large chapel that is used for private functions, weddings and concerts. The walls are carved to resemble wooden sculptures and biblical scenes. The Wieliczka Salt Mine is 327 meters deep and extends via horizontal passages and chambers for over 287 kilometers (178 miles). The tour is definitely worth the trip.
