Have you thought about going to St. Petersburg—Russia not Florida? Mother Russia should be on your bucket list. Even today, there is still a worldwide fascination with the Romanovs—the Tsar’s dynasty, the murders in Ekaterinburg, Rasputin and Anastasia. I spent time in Russia and was captivated by its people, history and food. Moscow is vibrant and historic, but St. Petersburg is one of the world’s most beautiful cities.
Here are my suggestions for must-see places in a two-three day visit to St. Petersburg, Russia:
- The Hermitage, housed in Catherine the Great’s Winter Palace on Palace Square, is one of the world’s largest and esteemed museums.
- Church of Savior on Spilled Blood, Tsar Alexander III ordered this stunning orthodox church be built on the exact spot where his father was killed. (It looks a lot like St. Basel’s Cathedral in Moscow.)
- Kazan Cathedral is across the street from the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood and houses the spectacular Our Lady of Kazan icon.
- Saint Isaac’s Cathedral is the largest cathedral in St. Petersburg and the 4th biggest dome building in the world.
- Peter and Paul Fortress is home to many museums and was the first building constructed in St. Petersburg
- Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral is the final resting place of the Tsars.
- Palace Square is the heart of the city and is a favorite for tourists.
- Nevsky Prospect is the most famous street in the City—buy caviar, chocolate, dolls, etc.
After you have seen the great architecture of St. Petersburg, take a cruise on the canals and Neva River. It is called the Venice of the North for a reason!
Live Moore.
