Live Moore: Figgy Pudding

Live Moore: Figgy Pudding

When I think of an old fashion English Christmas, the first thing that comes to mind is figgy pudding, or what we know as plum pudding. Folks even sing a carol, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas, and demand figgy pudding. During the Victorian era, wives began to celebrate the last Sunday before Advent —in which the Book of Common Prayer’s liturgy includes a prayer that begins, “Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people”—as “Stir-up Sunday.” The tradition was for each member in the family to take turns that day stirring up the Christmas pudding ingredients, which was then wrapped and boiled. Figgy pudding needs time to mature and was not to be served before Christmas Day. The pudding has been described as similar to fruitcake, but not! The ingredients include suet, brown sugar, raisins and dried fruits/currents, candied orange peel, eggs, breadcrumbs, nutmeg, cloves, allspice and plenty of alcohol. Before serving, you pour hot flaming brandy sauce over the cake. I plan to order figgy pudding this year and drink some brandy to ring in the season.?
