Live Moore: British Slang

Richard and I have visited the UK many times and have another trip planned for later this year--COVID willing!?London is a great place to hear people speaking different languages and dialects in the pubs and tube. I find it fascinating to listen to folks speak English but not understand what they are saying. The Brits and Yankees really do have different slang phrases.?For your next trip to London, or to visit my favorite city of York, here are some British slang terms that you should learn:

  • ?"It's monkey outside" means it is very cold
  • "Her Majesty's pleasure" means to be going to prison
  • "I'm off to Bedfordshire" means I'm going to bed.
  • "Dog's dinner" means you have dressed nicely
  • "Know your onions" means very knowledgeable
  • "Arse-over-tit" means to fall over
  • "I'm chuffed" means proud
  • "I'll give you a bell" means that I will call you
  • "He's a planker" means he is an idiot

My favorite term is "Bob's your uncle," which means "There you have it!"??
