Live a life where you make your chosen path the right one

8 years ago from today, I tried throwing a question to my second-grade son casually, asking him what he dreams of becoming in the future. It's unusual for him to open up about himself, but that time, he began, "Um, well..." and started speaking. It turns out, he would want to be:

  1. Professional basketball player
  2. Magician
  3. Gamer
  4. Programmer
  5. Architect
  6. Scientist
  7. Mathematician

By the time when today's children become adults, it's said that 65% will be in jobs that don't currently exist.

Feeling that it's nonsense to impose my own standards on children who stand up to such an uncertain era, I responded, "You've got good vision. If that's your aim, strive to be the best in your chosen field. Establishing your position in that field will be key."

I recall the day 11 years ago when my son returned from a kindergarten at his second day. He asserted, "I think kindergarten isn't the thing for me."

We had a family meeting then. Both my wife and I listened to him. Then, we learned that he was serious. We eventually respected his determination.

Ever since, we've supported our child's choices.

We would want him to be responsible for his own decision which includes freedom with responsibility.

After all, what parents can do for their child is not ultimate. It's mostly about believing in the child's potential and offering maximum support when needed.

We have to be aware that children aren't possessions of their parents. We should realize children cannot be controlled according to parental wishes.

Isn't this also applicable to the relationship between a company and its employees?

Lately, I've learned about the origins of "MANAGEMENT". It stems from Italy, where it meant to guide horses, indicating finding ways to get things done.

Renowned in Japan's human resources arena, Yosuke Yagi states, "Organizations should avoid excessive control. Micromanagement diminishes motivation. In the modern age, organizations should prioritize fostering employees' abilities, motivation, and confidence."

I resonate deeply with that.

While it's great to empathize with the purpose of an organization, it's important to have your own understanding of such questions. "What is your own purpose? And does it align with the organization's purpose?"

I wish everyone fulfills their own life through working and make their chosen path the right one.

We should know choice is not anyone's but all ours.

Believing in individuals is a challenge for me. Our goals at jobs are somewhat dependent on employees’. After knowing your stories, I started thinking where to begin with. Perhaps I should first revisit the standards of hiring. My updated beliefs for now are that we should listen to candidates for hiring more carefully in order to align goals of the company, and alignment of both should be examined, together. Then, we can continue to seek and check alignments, together, time to time, which could be more sustainable than what we have in place now. Independently, raising the kid could be revisited, though, it needs to be a mutual effort with my better half. That could be more challenging to be updated. Perhaps…
