The Littlest Mogul: A 5-Year-Old's Guide to World Domination.
The Story Mob
Communications consultancy for gaming culture, digital entertainment and esports
The champagne’s been popped, the cake’s been cut - The Story Mob is officially 5 years old! After we blew out our candles and told Alexa to cue up Elton John’s ‘I’m Still Standing’ on repeat a few more times, we wanted to share some wisdom as a company that’s reached preschool age.
As a 5 year old, we don’t just know who we are - we now have the language to communicate it. We’re forging new paths and still getting into a ton of scrapes along the way. Here’s some highlights from our toddler scrapbook.
We Dream Big
At 5 years old, we’re still more excited about where the road leads than we are angry about the potholes. Over our short life, we’ve seen gaming and entertainment weather a worldwide pandemic and esports evolve from a straight up competitive sport to an entertainment choice jostling with a thriving content creator ecosystem.? Further afield, we’ve seen gaming culture hit the mark (Last of Us, Super Mario Bros) and miss the point (Netflix’s Resident Evil, anyone?).
And still we celebrate! There’s so many more possibilities in our industry than when we came blinking into this world, even if they might look a little different than we originally thought. Who’d have thought we’d be supporting the UK’s best with industry heavyweights BAFTA....or launching the newest reimagining of our favorite gaming IP. We’re here for it.
We Know How to Bring the Fun
No one shows up at a 5 year old’s birthday party expecting a board meeting. While we’re happy to flex our grown up side when it comes to corporate comms, we also know that it’s PR, not ER. Anna and I started this company to do it our way, to design our own destinies, but most importantly to have fun. We all got into gaming because we love it, after all. What better place to let our inner child experience a bit of joy?
Here’s our ongoing pledge: for every bigwig business announcement, you can also expect to see us ringside directing media at a real life slap fight with our favorite streamers or living out our desert dreams hosting influencers, media and celebrities at Coachella. Sprinkle in a little team bonding at Super Nintendo World, or a team Among Us gamefest and we’re happy 5 year olds.
We Still Get Into Trouble
We may be getting older, but we’re not always getting wiser. We’ve helped clients get out of playground fights (some we can talk about and some we can’t) but we haven’t always had the same kind of safety net for ourselves. We’ve been guilty of backing the wrong horse - projects that were born out of passion, but didn’t find their place in history due to a rapidly changing ecosystem.?
We’ve called gamers ‘Beautiful Weirdos’ - and taken some flack for it. We believe in the future of Web3 and thoughtfully applied monetization options that boost the industry for makers and players alike, even though many gamers consider it scorched earth. We take big swings and we don’t mind a few scraped knees. We’re only 5, after all!
We Get Complimented on How Big We’re Getting
When we take a look back at our baby pictures, we can’t believe how far we’ve come. Our earliest days were a blur of kitchen table laptop setups and endless airport lounge conference calls.?
When we look at our current Mobster lineup (18 faces across 2 continents) and smart office hubs for smart people in 2 major cities, we feel like we’ve come a long way. We know it’s not about ever increasing numbers, but about what we do now that we’re officially at the Big Kid Table. We’re proud of all Mobsters, past and present, who helped us get to level 5.?
The Future is Ours
We’re gonna KILL it in middle school.
