A Little Help From My Friends Makes All the Difference!
This last weekend I was so fortunate to have a great group of friends make the difference between a kid being too afraid to try climbing versus actually doing it! I have a special friend in McKinley, aka Mickey, who trys hard most of the time. I knew that coming on the rock climbing trip might push him to his max. The initial challenge was that the trail getting to the climbing area was especially steep and had loose rock. Our descent to the base was a real tear-jerker. I was a little concerned that my little friend might slide and hurt himself.
My close friend, Brett, who had put the trip together and is the man for rock climbing chose to stay back and help our little friend. He made it to the bottom where the group had gathered to unload and eventually climb. I knew that it would take a miracle for our friend to even attempt to climb.
As our group started to climb I had the opportunity to talk with some of the helpers who I hadn’t meet before. I was especially impressed with a mom who had four daughters, which included twins. As we talked and I met her girls, I didn’t realize she would soon win my heart.
I knew that persuading Mickey to come back to the climbing area from the ‘play zone’ wouldn’t be easy. I was rather persistent to persuade him to actually come over to the climbing zone. Then I introduced him to the mom, Sharon, who gladly welcomed the opportunity to help our little friend climb. I know initially Mickey wouldn’t make any progress without special help. It’s rather difficult to climb if you attempt by pulling yourself up with your arms instead of using your legs to push yourself up.
It took a Herculean effort by this mom of four to get Mickey to the first small ledge where he could actually stand by himself. I watched from a distance and took pictures. I was so jazzed to see Mickey actually do it! I knew that he would be so excited about his accomplishment. His sister and mom would be so proud of him. Yet, imagine what would have happened with Mickey if my new friend, the mom of four, hadn’t been there? She made what appeared to be impossible possible. Mickey could have left thinking he would never be able to do this so why come again. Instead, he had a life changing experience that I hope will inspire him to try new things that seem beyond his reach.
Yes, it’s incredible to be that special friend who can help someone accomplish what appears to be impossible. Then for the one who needs help it is a joyful experience to have that helping hand to make it and see your life changed and transformed!
