LISTENING THROUGH EYES

Every human from every walk of life has an inert need to be listened.
Few years ago, I read that to get best out of ourselves, one must feel from the mind and think from the heart.
Simply saying our senses must be completely engrossed in what we do.
The same analogy, I realized, holds true for conversations we make with others.
And that is when I thought about -- Listening through eyes..
Obviously metaphorically!
In several books I read about human relations, psychology and leadership, one thing stood out.
HUMANS ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO BE LISTENED!
I tried this for several months with different people.
Office colleagues, hotel personnel, waiters, street vendors, elderly people, children, blue-collared workers, mechanics, businessmen and so on.
All I needed to do was to smile and be genuinely appreciative of what they do and stand for.
And every time I have come out with a pleasant experience.
Not only that.
More importantly, it brought a smile on the person I connected with.
Most of us live in a social and economical structure where rushing is a norm.
Getting things done fast is a self-laden necessity.
Presenting one's views in front of others is considered a priority.
Human relations are taken for granted.
As they say:

Listen double to what you talk.
Quite, literally!
This is not a philosophy but need of an hour.
But how do we achieve this:
I have practiced this habit for quite sometime and it has paid me rich dividends.
a) Talk only for about 2 mins in the first 5-7 mins of a conversation.
(Unless of course if one is giving a presentation!)
b) Keep a smile during the conversation.
c) Keep eye-contact throughout.
d) Acknowledge at regular intervals showing I am attentive.
This works on personal and professional front both.
Try it, if you haven't yet!
Believe me, it works!
