Listening Begins with Respect

Listening is one of the best ways to demonstrate respect for others.?Let’s face it, when we express an idea, give directions, or ask a question, we are hoping that our audience is listening.?When colleagues, friends or family members speak, they expect their audience will listen to them.??We all want to be heard.?

In an environment of multi-tasking, it is easy for leaders to be distracted, not fully focused on what their colleagues are saying. ?Some leaders may be able to walk and chew gum at the same time, but when an associate is explaining a possible solution to a problem, they expect to be listened to or, at least for the listener, to suggest a better time for a conversation. ?Good listeners will consider whether they can give a conversation the respect it deserves.?Good listeners aren’t checking text messages when someone is talking to them.

Effective leaders understand that effective listeners should be speaking less than the person who initiated the conversation.?Good listeners avoid immediately providing a solution before the speaker has finished presenting the details.?

Effective listeners demonstrate respect by?#focusing?and?#listening?with intention.
