The world is changing a lot faster than our education system can keep up with. Curriculum lacks the dynamism to change and adapt to what is relevant out there today, let alone what will be relevant in a decade.
How is it possible that I had the clarity to choose my career at 13 years old and continue to be fascinated by it two decades later?
A few key factors contributed to my decision:
- My parents encouraged and empowered me to choose my high school institution at 11 years old and supported me along the way to allow me to focus on getting the most of my studies
- I attended the best technical high school in the country and received the best education I could have asked for, giving me years of specialization and discipline from a young age
- I listened to my mind and followed my heart to choose my career, thinking ahead of time what I believed I would enjoy for years and decades to come
- I appreciated the effort I had put in at each step along the way, reinforcing my commitment, dedication and hunger to get better
The last three years of high school I used to code throughout the night on a computer above my parents' bedroom and the bulky keyboard would wake up my mom, who would ask me to type more "quietly."
The passion behind every key stroke and the stamina I developed back then to work long hours have had an ever lasting effect on how I continue to work today; it is not unusual to find me two decades later doing any kind of work when most of the city is sleeping, still with a huge smile on my face.
I don't feel I'm working during business hours or outside business hours. I'm getting paid for work I'm passionate about and would do for fun and with the same level of professionalism on my spare time. When I'm at the office time flies because I'm enjoying what I do and that's a blessing. I try to inspire those around me to find joy, appreciation and motivation in what they do and in turn their work gets better.
What can you do to help your children make the best career decision with the information at hand at an early age?
Encourage your children to explore, be curious, know a bit about everything, try new experiences, ask questions, read or watch the news, connect with professionals in different fields of interest, get their hands dirty and fail fast to succeed long term. Spend quality time with your children, listen to them and help them become their best version yet. The earlier they get started the greater the advantage they will have, but most importantly the closer they will be to building their own successful futures.

4 年This is a true article.? My parents always encouraged me to strive for the best in everything I do.? Today I'm passionate about the work I do and its because of the strong foundation which I have been gifted with through my parents motivation.? It has created a strong work ethic, dedication and a drive to succeed.? As this was always part of my environment I was consciously aware of those who did not have such an environment.? Thus it is also important to provide the same encouragement to your peers and friends.? We must all play our part.? The right words spoken at the most unexpected time can ignite a fire of desire for achievement and success in anyone. Thanks Brian for a inspirational article!

4 年Great article! I sensed 3 keys that you utilized and are good messages for me. 1) you were guided and encouraged to choose. I know from my own experience that this is one of the most impacting thing that gives clarity(the gift that keeps on giving), motivation and inspiration to dream which ignites the next key. 2) passion, you through action of taking a step and following it through to completion became passionate. Your late night activity, because you were passionate it did not seem like work at all where others might. You passionately created the patterns that your reticular activation system embraced and ignites you still today. 3) complete immersion and completion!Key ingredient, you immersed yourself in your activity and kept at it until you accomplished the results you seek or the result showed up. It is faith, decision making and action that create amazing results. Thank you for sharing this example of what you did to lead you and people like me to share your journey! I am grateful

5 年Really like the idea "I don't feel I'm working during business hours or outside business hours". When you are passionate about something, it doesn't matter how long it takes, you can't stop until you are finished.
