LISTEN NOW: LinkedIn Top Voice & Tech for Good Leader Rakesh Bharania: Burning Man, thought leadership, and humanitarian crisis response

"How do we bring the technology from Silicon Valley into the context of humanitarianism into the context of public safety? How do we do it ethically? How do we do it responsibly?"

Rakesh Bharania once shared with me once how in refugee camps, disaster response would include a cell phone charging area. But in some parts of the world, you're causing more harm than good if you don't create a place for women to congregate separate from men. From immediate trafficking danger to religious rules to be observed and lax data protection in immediate response, our humanitarian reaction has to be careful and effective.

LinkedIn Top Voice in Social Impact, humanitarian tech leader, Rakesh Bharania is an Advisory Board Member of the Humanitarian Cybersecurity Center at the CyberPeace Institute and was previously was Director of Humanitarian Technology Impact at Salesforce.org.

He's the guy to connect with around all things humanitarian and disaster response.

In this episode of How To: Thought Leadership, Rakesh and I talked about:

  • Why you'll find him at Burning Man
  • Why he went to Eastern Europe with NetHope early in the Ukraine crisis
  • What responsibility looks like in tech for good in crisis.
  • (And did he always want to be a thought leader? Is he glad to be in the spotlight, or....)

Amazing leader and conversation.
