5G, Security & Broadcasting
As 5G networks rocket towards wider adoption in 2024, the security landscape is bracing for exciting developments and persistent challenges. The anticipated shift to Standalone 5G, boasting enhanced security features, will demand adaptable solutions. New attack vectors unique to 5G, like network slicing and the explosion of IoT devices, will necessitate specialized protections. To combat these threats, a multi-layered defense incorporating firewalls, encryption, and AI-powered threat detection is becoming the gold standard. While concerns linger around network complexity, supply chain vulnerabilities, and standardization, the increasing focus on 5G security paints a promising picture for a safer and more reliable future.
5G broadcasting gears up for takeoff in 2024! Expect larger trials featuring live events like the UEFA Euros and Olympics, showcasing its potential for high-quality, low-latency content delivery to smartphones. Growth forecasts predict a booming market driven by demand for live sports, and even data broadcasting for connected devices.
In this episode, 5G, Security and Broadcasting, The 46th Season Virtual Conference Session presents Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2024, Private 5G Security, 5G Security, AI in Energy, Securing the Backbone: Critical Network Infrastructure Security in the 5G Era, Security for Private 5G Networks, 5G Broadcasting: Measurements and Drive Testing, Telcos to TechCos: Harnessing data in a competitive space, 5G MBS; Network efficiency improvements and new functions.

Moiz Baig , Cybersecurity Advisor of 诺基亚 highlights "In the realm of 5G, securing mission-critical networks necessitates standardized frameworks, close collaboration with vendors to implement robust security features, and comprehensive end-to-end security assurance measures. Standardization efforts by bodies like 3GPP and GSMA ensure interoperability and consistency, while vendor implementations play a crucial role in deploying encryption, authentication, and intrusion detection mechanisms. Achieving end-to-end security assurance demands a holistic approach, encompassing all network layers and involving continuous monitoring and threat response readiness."

Jack Hu Hu, Product Marketing Manager of CTOne Inc. highlights "When enterprises consider digital transformation, 5G technology delivers significant advantages and can play a crucial role in achieving their objectives. However, with the increased use of next-generation communication technologies (CT), the enterprise attack surface can grow exponentially and increase overall business risk.
With a focus on enabling digital transformation while managing risk across the enterprise attack surface, it is clear that the scope for security should encompass not only IT and OT but also CT, re-enforcing the need for holistic protection of all aspects of the enterprise's digital infrastructure."

Suresh Garikipati highlights " 3GPP security mechanisms are a set of security features and protocols designed to secure 5G networks. The 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) is a collaborative effort by telecommunications standard development organizations to define technical specifications used in mobile networks. Also the importance of horizontal and vertical security in 5G networks. Horizontal security refers to securing communication between all nodes at the same level of the network architecture. Vertical security refers to securing communication between nodes at different levels of the network architecture, which is especially important as network virtualization functions and cloud-based services become more prevalent in 5G. Some of the specific security mechanisms include Encryption and integrity mechanisms to protect the confidentiality and integrity of data; Authentication mechanisms to ensure that devices and users are who they claim to be; and Authorization mechanisms to control access to network resources."

Maura Outeiral Garcia , Business Development Director of Gsertel highlights During "5G Broadcasting: measurements and drive testing" presentation, it took place a brief introduction regarding the Enhancements of 5G Broadcast to LTE of the different releases of the 3GPP, as well as the modes for 5G Broadcast: mixed and dedicated mode. Results from two trials were shown, where the portable analyzer HEXYLON from GSERTEL was used to monitor the 5G Broadcast signals and the traditional 5G, utilized for the video contribution from the filming cameras. In the dedicated 5G channel scenario, HEXYLON measures considering the main change in the synchronism part: the adoption of extended CP (Cyclic Prefix). The signaling of dedicated mode channels is completely different from the one of traditional LTE channels. More info at: https://www.gsertel.com/hexylon-5g

Alihan ARICA , Senior Sales Manager of solvatio AG highlights "Traditional telcos are embracing a new model – the TechCo" This transition brings significant advantages:
Key Trends and Strategies for the Telco-to-TechCo Shift
Success Strategies:
Andrzej Milkowski highlights " 5GMBS (Multicast Broadcast Services) solution is a new access method introduced by 3GPP into mobile networks. Multicast communication (bidirectional) and broadcast information (one direction) let the operator build an efficient network. Saves network resources in busy hours of customer activities like watching popular streaming platform services. It is dedicated to support services like public emergency alerts, video streaming, mission-critical communication (MCPTT), V2X broadcasting, or massive IoT software updates. Upcoming release 18 of the standards let the external CDN application providers impact the communication policy like the change of unicast to multicast connection."

Four futuristic concepts unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2024
Each year, the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona provides an opportunity to discover the very best in new connected devices. This 2024 edition was no exception, with many new concepts likely to give rise to future consumer products on display at the event.
A smartphone that wraps around your wrist
At the Barcelona show, no less than two manufacturers presented prototypes for smartphones that wrap around the wrist. Visitors to the Mobile World Congress were able to admire Motorola's wrap-around smartphone, first unveiled last fall at Lenovo World Tech in the US.
The idea is to be able to wear your smartphone on your wrist, carrying it around while keeping your hands free. To achieve this, the handset and its screen can curve around until the terminal clamps around the wrist, attached magnetically to a metal bracelet.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics also presented a smartphone with a flexible screen that can wrap around the wrist. Spectacular though they are, these two concepts are not (yet) destined for commercialisation.
A smartphone with no applications
At this year’s Mobile World Congress, Deutsche Telekom , in association with American startup Brain.ai , demonstrated a highly original smartphone prototype, devoid of even the slightest application.
Only an AI-powered personal assistant is installed, tasked with carrying out a multitude of practical tasks, such as organising a vacation or booking a table at a restaurant. Still, it could be hard to imagine doing without access to your favorite social networks.
A transparent PC
MWC is not just about smartphones, with devices like PCs also on show. This year, Lenovo stole the show in that field, with an astonishing model featuring a completely transparent screen, as seen in certain televisions.
This 17in PC has a borderless, truly transparent MicroLED screen. The classic keyboard, meanwhile, is replaced by a panel that can act as a virtual keyboard or touch screen, for drawing, for example. Resolutely forward-looking, this prototype is not intended for commercial release.
A smart ring
Samsung is not to be outdone in terms of innovation, with the presentation of the Galaxy Ring, a smart ring. Its integrated sensors are designed to provide real-time data on the wearer's state of fitness (or sleep), but the South Korean manufacturer is remaining discreet about its actual functionalities.
Still at the prototype stage, it should be on the market by the end of the year. While the Oura ring is the current leader in this area, other major tech manufacturers, such as Honor, are also said to be working on this type of product.
Thank you!
