The list of reasons why your time is slipping away

The list of reasons why your time is slipping away

I’m dropping in today to remind you that you are a business owner and not a chauffeur or someone else’s errand runner.

Here’s what I mean: you likely have some personal time leaks that are happening during work hours, things you’re doing that if you’re being honest with yourself, you probably shouldn’t be doing.

Here are some “time leak” examples I’ve experienced personally and some I’ve heard over the years that eat up the time you could be using during the day to grow your business exponentially:

  • Going to the gym during the workday because there are a fewer people there
  • Kids’ activities like Little League, PTA, Scouts leader, driving to swim meets or theater practice, picking the kids up from school every day, etc.
  • A board of directors position (or more than one)
  • Grocery shopping or laundry
  • Time-consuming volunteer groups
  • Projects with friends that have no ROI for the business
  • Family obligations and quality time that could be rescheduled for after work hours

By using our valuable (and limited) work time on non-money-generating tasks, whether at work or doing personal errands and other personal tasks, you effectively create expensive leaks in your time bucket.

You probably wonder where all your time is going, but it’s actually going in places that are not moving your business forward. The good news is, these are things you have control over and can change, though it will require a mindset shift about saying ‘no’.

I know this can bring up resistance. And I just want to assure you, if you can relate, please know that I’ve heard hundreds of stories over the years of wonderful, well-meaning women just like you and me who over-do, over-give and have a very hard time saying no or setting boundaries.

When you over-do for others, you lose valuable time that should be spent on your business growth and success.

When I see this kind of behavior, wanting to give back too much, I get the sense that the need to feel significant or not knowing how to say no is what is getting in the way of these otherwise powerful women growing their businesses.

Self-employed does not mean unemployed with a full day with nothing to do.

You have important work to do too. And this may just be an opportunity for you to speak up.

I understand that this can feel like a lot to take in because there is societal pressure, especially for women, to give our time away. Perhaps we don’t want to be seen as a bad mother or bad parent, as a person who isn’t nice, just because we say ‘no’…but saying ‘no’ in these situations is actually an act of self-love.

Clear the decks and gain back your time:?

Ask yourself, “Do I actually have to do this? Or is this something that’s expected of me? Is it because I have said ‘yes’, in the past, with my old mindset, that I feel obligated to continue to do it now? Is this something I can just put on pause for a year, hire someone to do, or an obligation I can share with others?”

Also just practice saying ‘no’ more often; try it with lower stakes situations without explaining yourself so you can get used to the uncomfortable feelings this can bring up.

Yes, you will initially have resistance in doing this. The old way of doing things will seem more comfortable, but it really is worthwhile to stop doing things that aren’t working and focus on exponential growth activities instead.
