Lions and the Law of Moore

The way we think is based on 300,000 years of experience.??Apart from finding food and shelter we also had to deal with lions and tigers and bears (oh my!). We learned that most of the things that could hurt us either didn’t move or moved with predictability – a lion can only run so fast. You could quickly calculate whether or not you could make it back to the cave before the lion intersected you. Change was linear.? ?

With 300,000 years of indoctrination on how things work, we find it very difficult to deal with exponential change. The digitization of everything means that the rate of change now follows ‘Moore’s Law’ and is rocketing up that infamous curve. Nothing is constant. What we think is our reality won’t be next year. ?

In this ever-changing market environment, companies need to ensure that they are optimally positioned so that they can not only survive, but thrive.??We use a construct called a Position Statement with our clients. It answers these key questions:

• What do you do?
• Who do you do it for?
• What problem does it solve for them?
• How else could they solve it? and
• Why would yours be the best solution for them?

Demographics Changes Population - Between 2020 and 2024, the US added 10 million new consumers (equivalent to populations of New York City and Huston combined). Canada added another one million (Calgary). Immigration - In 2023, the US took in 1.1 million new people (San Jose). And Canada took in 471,777 (Brampton) ?

Technology Changes? Since 2020 - Generative AI, mRNA, Quantum computing, VR, Clean energy,??SpaceX (6500 satellites) have all become well-known concepts ?

Environmental Changes Whatever you believe?is the cause - the environment is changing - storms, temperatures, fires etc. ?Each one of these affects how we do business.?

• Your customers have changed.?
• Their needs have changed.?
• The value you provide has changed.
• You have new competitors.?
• Your employees have changed.

Exponential change underlines the importance of refreshing your Market Position annually. And it’s important because it’s necessary for your survival and because it can give you competitive advantages that others fail to see.? ?
