As coaches, we often try to connect deeply with others. Our ability to establish these types of connections with others depends on two things. We must understand the other person well enough, and we must care about them enough.

We often need to dig deeper into their core beliefs with a look underneath what drives automatic thoughts. The core beliefs are simpler and more evaluative. They are assumptions of our value, what we think we can expect from other, and what we think about the world.

One of the most useful tools we have at our disposal is the ability to listen through the lens of developmental theory and to ask questions like complete the sentences with the first thing that comes to mind:
