Linkedin's social selling index: How to use it to boost your personal brand?

So first of all, what is "Linkedin's Social Selling Index"?!

Linkedin is by far the most important social network for professionals, with a user base approaching one billion users , so theoretically one billion opportunities!

Linkedin launched this feature in 2014, yet is not very popular but on the other hand very interesting and important. First, social selling means using social media as a direct sales tool. Therefore, the Social Selling Index is LinkedIn's own overall evaluation of your personal profile and presence over the platform, reflecting your social selling power. Simply, it gives you a score between 0 and 100, indicating how well you can do social selling over Linkedin.

As you can see in the image below, my social selling index is 74/100. This means that my profile ranks with the best 1% of my industry, and within the top 3% within my network (I am trying hard to be within the top 1% here as well!)

So simply the higher score you have means, the more professional & trustworthy your personal brand you have over LinkedIn, and accordingly more capability of social selling. But to be frank, this has nothing to do with Linkedin's algorithm and the reach/exposure of your posts (more about this towards the end below)

So how does LinkedIn calculate your Social Selling Index (or power!)? It is based on 4 criteria as follows.


The indicators (& pillars of) SSI

  1. Your professional Personal Brand: This indicator mainly measures two things: The completeness of your profile (here is how to do it ) and the quality of your content (here's also how to do it )
  2. Finding the right people: This indicator measures how far are you connected to relevant people in your industry (by using a highly targeted and optimized content strategy ) and how well you search for those relevant profiles using the right keywords
  3. Engaging with insights: This indicator measures how good you are at sharing interesting sharable content, especially about industry updates and insights. So in other words, are you the go-to person for your network to stay updated with the latest trends? Hint: Write in-depth articles! (here is the process and the needed tools to do that! )
  4. Building relationships: This indicator measures how good you are at establishing trustworthy relations with decision-makers. This means how often you grow your network on LinkedIn, in terms of the number of connections, and the quality of those connections as well.


So, how to use it to grow your personal brand on LinkedIn?

Here are great ways to use it:

  1. Measuring the power of your personal brand: It is a dynamic number, so I personally use it to check it once per week! It gives me an indicator if I am improving my presence and influence over the platform or not.
  2. Improvement indicator for your LinkedIn presence: use it as an indicator that gives you a clear idea where are the areas of improvement that you should focus on! Is it the completeness of your profile, quality of your content, power of your network, and so on?
  3. 3Cs gauge: Content, conversations, conversions: It gives you also an indicator of how far your content generates useful conversations that leads to conversions.
