LinkedIn’s Responsible AI Principles

LinkedIn’s Responsible AI Principles

Two months ago, in our LinkedIn’s 2023 Big Ideas for data and AI, I shared some of the exciting moments ahead for generative AI, large-scale modeling and infrastructure, and the responsible use of AI. Already, the interest and speed of innovation in these areas has been transformative.

AI is at an inflection point. But AI is not new to LinkedIn. We’ve been an AI company for a while now – our first integration of AI in our product was 16 years ago (2007) with People You May Know. This technology is now the bedrock to our products and has been an integral part of how we deliver value to our members and customers and build trust in our systems.?

With AI being a core part of who we are, I’m also incredibly proud of the progress and milestones we've achieved on our responsible use of AI. As the Head of Data and AI, I lead a group of world-class engineers and data scientists that care deeply about keeping that responsibility top of mind in all the ways we work with this technology.

That’s why, today we shared the Responsible AI Principles that we use at LinkedIn to guide our work:

  • Advance Economic Opportunity: People are at the center of what we do. AI is a tool to further our vision, empowering our members and augmenting their success and productivity.?
  • Uphold Trust: Our commitments to privacy, security and safety guide our use of AI. We take meaningful steps to reduce the potential risks of AI.
  • Promote Fairness and Inclusion: We work to ensure that our use of AI benefits all members fairly, without causing or amplifying unfair bias.??
  • Provide Transparency: Understanding of AI starts with transparency. We seek to explain in clear and simple ways how our use of AI impacts people.?
  • Embrace Accountability: We deploy robust AI governance, including assessing and addressing potential harms and fitness for purpose, and ensuring human oversight and accountability. We are committed to learning from, and helping, others as AI best practices, norms and laws evolve.

LinkedIn was founded with a clear vision to create economic opportunity for every member of the global workforce, and the responsible use of AI helps us accelerate our progress toward that vision.

You can read more about the responsible AI principles in a blog post from Blake Lawit (LinkedIn's Senior Vice President and General Counsel) and me here.

Ya Xu LinkedIn does a good job of balancing this in my view in comparison to other services. There are a wide variety of views and perspectives, and not just the rising of the most popular views. This helps many professionals share with their peers and challenge prior assumptions.

From the transparency perspective, is there a landing page somewhere to read about how the current algorithms work?

I am struggling with the claim that the " people you may know" feature has anything to do with AI
