LinkedIn vs Instagram. Which platform is better for you? Part II.

LinkedIn vs Instagram. Which platform is better for you? Part II.

In April 2023, I posted an article via this newsletter about what social media networks fit better for a security professional, how the industry has changed, and the importance of personal branding to develop a career.

Today, many professionals in the industry do not focus in a good manner on how to connect with peers and friends to develop business contacts or good networking.

The ISC West took place April 1-4 (SIA Education@ISC: April 1-3 | Exhibit Hall: April 2-4) at the Venetian Expo in Las Vegas, The International Security Conference and Exposition is the leading comprehensive and converged security trade event in the U.S. My findings were that many of my peers posted on Instagram their event pictures. In my case, I have an Instagram account for family and friends, and as a news feed tool, I follow several news pages. As a fun fact, I only watch TV for baseball (MLB Yankees) and basketball (NBA Boston) games. I have a second Instagram account for the promotion of my book and to make announcements about my security volunteer work.

The industry has changed in many ways, and one of them is how we connect with peers. If you want to make valuable connections, LinkedIn is the best platform. I remember those days when my father had an agenda in his suitcase, and he had to go through the agenda to find a contact.

However, many professionals in the security industry fail to establish meaningful connections with their peers and friends to develop business contacts and networks.

Understanding the User Base of LinkedIn

LinkedIn is ideal for networking due to its distinguished user base, which includes seasoned professionals from various industries, such as executives, job seekers, and businesses.

As a digital epicenter for networking and professional development, it attracts individuals who possess a focused drive for career advancement and external partnerships. A profound comprehension of this audience is pivotal in crafting tailor-made content that is both appropriate and engaging.

To achieve this feat, take these strategic actions into account:

  • Delve into extensive research of your connections and aspire to identify prominent industry influencers and shared professional interests to suitably tailor your interactions.
  • Make thoughtful contributions that showcase your professional persona. Share encompassing insights, provide invaluable feedback, and participate in in-depth discussions that will spur intellectual discourse and encourage mutual benefits.

Understanding the Reasons Behind LinkedIn

LinkedIn users look for valuable content that can help them in their professional lives, such as job opportunities and career guidance.

To align your objectives with these motivations, it is crucial to take certain steps, such as providing intrinsic value in your content creation. Whether you're sharing articles, updates, or advice, your content must contribute to your connections' professional growth and development.

It is also essential to stay purpose-driven and ensure that your interactions and content align with professional advancement and industry relevance. This will help you maintain a professional aura on the platform.

While entertainment may offer momentary relief, investing in your future through platforms like LinkedIn can lead to exponential growth and success beyond what you might have imagined possible.

Simplicity Is Not Always the Answer

The LinkedIn community covets substance over style, depth over conciseness, and professionalism over virality. Consider taking these steps to ensure the perfect balance:

  • Prioritize quality over quantity: invest your valuable time tailoring elaborate postings that manifest your knowledge and expertise or reflect industry trends comprehensively.
  • Concentrate on cultivating long-lasting relationships: Rather than seeking instant gratification through likes or shares, aim to engage with your network through thoughtful conversations and persistent liaisons.
