LinkedIn vs. Instagram For Artists: Which Social Media Platform Is Better?

Are you tired of the daily Instagram grind, frustrated by its ever-changing algorithms, and fed up of fleeting content that disappears in a matter of hours? Then it’s about time for a change!

Have you ever considered LinkedIn as a better social media platform for artists?

Some months ago, I started my account here on LinkedIn, and it's been really liberating. I can post longer content on LinkedIn and my posts have a lasting impact. Unlike Instagram's fleeting posts, LinkedIn content has a longer lifespan, making it perfect for search-driven articles and how-to guides that remain evergreen.

?

Is Instagram Still Useful For Artists?

Instagram has become a never-ending treadmill. On Instagram, it feels like I am throwing content into a void without meaningful returns. I am constantly grinding to grow, but the engagement and reach are disappointingly elusive. It’s incredibly frustrating.

Meta, the company behind Instagram, seems more focused on keeping you addicted to the platform than on helping you succeed. Instagram's opaque algorithms and lack of transparency make it difficult to know what works. Have you researched on hashtags and posting strategies? Well, I did. But it’s still no guarantee for success.

Instagram doesn't spill the secrets of growth, so it feels like navigating a maze with no exit, leading to frustration.

Instagram's relentless posting schedule is especially draining for us artists, because we first and foremost need our time to create art. We cannot spend hours and hours on Instagram trying to please the algorithm and to achieve enough daily screen time.

After all, Instagram does not just reward your content but also your time spent on the platform, pushing an unhealthy obsession. Furthermore, they want you to splurge on ads to grow—an unsustainable route for many creators who don’t even make money with their art yet.

Is LinkedIn A Good Platform For Artists?

LinkedIn, in contrast, values quality over quantity. Each post becomes an investment in your future. It's a mindset shift that makes it easier to maintain a sustainable work-life balance.

It's a platform where you can genuinely build a portfolio of valuable posts and articles, not just throw content into the abyss. The content you publish on LinkedIn remains relevant and searchable, a stark contrast to Instagram's fleeting posts and their “pay for your exposure” mentality.

In other words, LinkedIn is better for artists, because it rewards creativity and allows for a more balanced life.

In my opinion, Instagram has morphed into a time- and money-sucking vampire that deliberately restricts the reach of posts, maybe particularly of smaller accounts, in favor of paid ads.

What do I think so? Well, let’s have a look at some examples.

Based on the number of Likes, comments and Saves, my artwork ‘oblivion.‘ must have reached more than 200 people minimum back in 2017. Nowadays, in 2022 and 2023, though, my Instagram posts don’t even reach 20 accounts on average—and not even one third of my followers! It’s hilarious.

Instagram 2017 vs. Instagram 2022: the social media network systematically restricts the reach of posts to make its users pay for ads. (On the left, my artwork “oblivion.”)

Has my art gotten that bad between 2017 and 2022? Mmh. You tell me.

I for my part am certain it’s because Instagram changed its algorithm to favor posting frequency, screen time, and paid ads.

And there are many, many more indicators to back that statement. Just think of all the “Boost this Post” suggestion that you are now getting on Instagram—in your news feed, in your activity feed, in your Stories, …

Interestingly, Instagram wants me to ‘boost my posts to reach people who may not follow me‘. But the above screenshot clearly shows that my posts reach twice as many non-followers as followers already. Doesn’t make sense.

This is what Instagram for artists looks like today: you are constantly being invited to ‘Boost your Posts’. If a 10 Euro credit is not enough to lure you into paying for ads, they are trying it with 20 Euros the week after… Artworks from left to right: BLΔCK DIΔMOND, Cat & Mouse, Scared Bunny.

… and fun factor: Instagram even wants you to boost the posts of other people that you randomly share in your Story! (Instagram, your algorithm needs to get smarter. Urgently.)

Instagram wants me to promote a post that I shared from @bossbabe.inc in my Story to increase MY reach. lmao…

Now, honestly, what am I to think of such a platform? Do you really consider Instagram to be still a good platform for artists?

Instagram is no longer artist-friendly. Its approach to content creators is increasingly unsustainable, and the platform's addictive nature can be toxic. LinkedIn offers a healthier and more rewarding alternative for artists looking for a genuine connection with their audience.

Even though I’ve been here for only a couple of months, I was able to build a more engaged community on LinkedIn, with meaningful connections and discussions. It's more than the shallow interactions on Instagram.

Admittedly, creating content for LinkedIn may and require more effort, but it's a more genuine and rewarding experience. Writing articles feels like an extension of my creativity. I can express myself and provide real value to my audience. I’m not pressured to churn out new content daily, and my posts remain relevant for longer.

In Conclusion, LinkedIn vs. Instagram For Artists: Which Is Better?

When choosing between LinkedIn and Instagram for artists, I strongly recommend giving LinkedIn a chance. It doesn't push you into the toxic cycle of addiction. You'll discover a more balanced and fulfilling way to showcase your art and connect with your audience. Your creative journey will be so much happier!

This is a great article! I used to really enjoy using Instagram for sharing my art, but lately, it's really, really discouraging. Instagram's recent change in the hashtags system made it almost impossible to find smaller artists, which was something that I loved to do to build a community and make friends. I hadn't thought of LinkedIn as an alternative platform, though. On Instagram, I like to post silly sketches, studies and unflattering process pictures, which I feel do not belong here, since LinkedIn is a more serious and professional platform. On that note, I'd love to read another article from you on HOW to use LinkedIn as an artist. It would be interesting and inspiring, I'm sure. Anyways, thank you for sharing your take on this topic. It was well worth the read! =)

AngieG. ~ GinAngieLa wow this article couldn’t be more timely. I’m kinda feeling guilty not posting my designs on IG as I felt the competition for eyeballs there are getting too much. Looks like I should double down on LinkedIn!
