To follow are snippets from the forty-minute interview I had with Bob Roark at Business Leaders Podcast. If you'd like to listen to the complete interview, you can do that here. During the interview, I share a few tactics which involved some screen sharing. You can view the video here.
It is the value that you're bringing to the organization and the value that you bring to the people that you serve.
If you convey that succinctly in your About or Summary section you are getting your message across as to exactly what you do and exactly how you can benefit someone who hops onto your profile. The first couple of sentences are super critical to encourage people to want to dig deeper. Many people are uncomfortable with writing their Summary content. If you're not, get help. That's something that we offer, as we help to craft the entire profile so that it all is neat, clean, and effective.
The algorithms love consistency, but the algorithms are always changing. Like any other social platform, the objective of the social platform is to get you to stay on the social platform. It's going to give love to people who are kicking out content that's being engaged with consistently.
I was on the phone with a brand-new client, who is a VP in a large organization. Their marketing team does a great job on their LinkedIn page, which is a benefit. Not everybody has that as an asset, but her team does. The content is great, but she does not know how to use it. No problem. Once your Profile is buffed and polished. You can begin engaging with corporate content, sharing it throughout your network, and hopping into conversations that your team and network are having.
- There are a lot of organizations where the marketing department is spinning things off, but as an individual, you're not thinking about, “How could that help me?”
- It can help you by sharing that information. If you put together a schedule to post once a week or commit to sharing an article a biweekly (you can certainly get more aggressive with this) the more eyeballs you're going to get on things.
- This will start to persuade the algorithms to start giving you love and help you get seen. As people begin commenting and sharing, you're getting seen not only by your network but by their network.
- There are many sophisticated tactics you can employ using content sharing within an organization to help push a narrative, for example.
There are many things that can be done strategically, but the bottom line is you've got to get out there and you've got to be consistent.
It doesn't matter if you're running a company, looking for a job, or pivoting your career, you have to be solving someone else's problem.
We all are problem solvers in whatever it is that we do. If you convey that to people, then they get it, “That's who I go to help me.”
When you have a problem, you want that problem solved. If you go to the person who is the solver of your problem, you're super happy. That isn't selling. You are not selling, you are coherently defining the problems that you solve via your LinkedIn presence.
In terms of using third party software to spam connections and build followers, I'll give this as a warning. While the method is very commonplace, it's highly frowned upon by LinkedIn and will get you banned.
I remember a couple of years ago, there was a big deal about individuals and their Twitter followers – many of whom were fake. It makes those people look horrible.
On LinkedIn, it's your name that we're talking about. This isn't a marketing campaign that you can hide behind. No, this is your name. If you get banned for trying to cheat the system, it looks bad on you. You don't want to do those kinds of things. You want to do the right things, it changes the sales game entirely.
