Latest LinkedIn New Features and Updates

?? Easier adding of images to articles and newsletters

While producing our past couple of newsletters we've noticed that when importing text and images from Word, many of the images get added now too. Previously they needed to be inserted manually from our files. This significantly cuts down on the time needed to create these.

?? Updated scroll bar for banners on app

This makes seeing the bar much easier as their visibility previously depended largely on the background colour of the image it was over. It is also not obvious which banner is currently visible but the now-elongated dot shows this. We can use this feature to halt or pause the scrolling of the banners we’re viewing. ?

?? Jobs tab added to Messaging

This is a folder to which you can move messages about job opportunities. This helps keep them in one place for ease of access.

NEW VIDEO FEATURES

?? Video feed available on desktop

Just as when the standalone video feed first came to the app, access on desktop/web is via a ‘Videos for you’ section in the feed. Tap into any video to open the feed and scroll for more. Experience indicates those seen there are less likely to be from our connections.

?? Full-screen vertical video display format

Like images, videos now take up the full width of the feed whether in vertical or horizontal format.

?? Larger video display in the mobile app

Here too videos take up the entire screen and whether this is a good thing will depend on your preferences.

?? More prominent follow option in full-screen video player

In theory, an excellent idea that we've not seen yet.

?? FINALLY! New video analytics

For the longest time we’ve not had much data on our videos apart from what’s available on all posts. Now, we can also see video views, and total as well as average watch time. This last metric is likely to be the most important to improve.

?? Mini-profile overview, with video uploads highlighted

When you tap on a video creator’s profile image or name in the video feed it gives instant access to a wealth of information including a summary of their most recent videos. This might be a great way to attract higher visibility.

?? More videos in search results

LinkedIn will deliver more videos in our search results and most likely they’ll display ahead of other content, depending on your search query.?

?? Media in posting split out into image and video options

Usually, we have just one media button, the image icon, but spotted on a client’s profile is the separation of this into video and image. There's been nothing official about this so may be just a test.

?? Top Voice badge now assessed every 6 months

This programme recognises members who consistently demonstrate expertise and leadership in their fields in ways that educate, inspire and inform the larger community. Recipients display a blue badge on their profile which confers a high level of credibility and knowledge. Previously awarded annually this is now being reassessed bi-annually.

?? New engagement metric

The Comments button underneath our posts shows the total number of comments added, and includes any replies. This new metric tells us the number of Originating comments, i.e. the comments without the replies. We could also describe this as unique comments as it is a good indicator of the number of different people commenting, assuming people only comment once. To access this new metric tap on [xx comments] below the post to see the number of originating comments. (This has come and gone from my profile.)

?? Display fonts blocked from profile Headlines

Decorative fonts cannot be read by screen-readers and are unable to be indexed so if you have these in your headline (AND in your name field, in my opinion) you should remove them. They can no longer be added to headlines but they still seem to be displaying on profiles that already have them.

?? Easier way to edit scheduled posts

A line has been added to the top of scheduled posts, displaying the ‘Posting date and time’ along with an edit button.

How to Make Best Use of Scrolling Banners on Your LinkedIn Profile

First launched late last year, the initial rollout of scrolling or revolving banners on LinkedIn profiles was slow. It is now speeding up and we are seeing more of these.?They are likely to be widespread by the end of the year.

Having had the feature for the past 3 weeks and created several for clients, I better understand how these work best. And it’s surprising how something ostensibly so simple can be so difficult to get right! That’s because several factors outside our control are in play.

But first – a recap. With a Premium account we can now add up to 5 individual images to our banner or cover image on our profiles. These scroll automatically every 3 seconds. A black (desktop) or white (app) line of dots in the lower right quadrant indicates which banner is currently displayed and allows viewers to pause automatic scrolling.

What makes these surprisingly difficult to get right is that only one set of banners may be uploaded that display on both desktop and mobile, but the how they display differs as you can see from these images below.

Banner on desktop:

Banner on app:

Based on the difficulties we’ve had getting these to a point where we and our clients are happy, here are our tips:

?? Choose a background colour for your banner that both the white and black dots will be visible on.

?? Don’t place any important element in the bottom right quadrant where it might be obscured by the dots.

?? Place images to the right of the banner and text in the middle – however, position text slightly to the right so it isn’t obscured by your profile image on the app.

?? A good position for your logo is in the top left corner.

?? Keep it VERY simple – one message per banner.

?? Make your text as large as possible so it is easily read on the app.

?? Use as few words as possible, preferably no more than 5 for your main heading.

?? When adding a subheading, also make the text as large and brief as possible for ease of visibility.

?? Canva has templates for these.

?? Use the same or similar background for each banner to reduce confusion.

?? Use colours to differentiate each banner.

Here’s an example of a set of banners we created for a client in the Caymans

Others with scrolling banners we like are: Leanne Calderwood, CMP Roy Kowarski John Espirian

Our summary: these new scrolling banners are an excellent addition to our profiles and can instantly stop the scroll. But they are fiddly to create if you want to use them to their full capacity.

No thanks. Just met with LI sales.?Holding up long time Sales Navigator Advanced Users for ransom is a showstopper. $1,600/yr per user for Advanced Plus (10 USER MINIMUM) is a crime. As an SMB, LI is seriously out of touch with its user base. I was an early adopter of LinkedIn for 20 years. This stunt will lose a lot of customers, including me.

Hi Lynnaire, I use Sales Nav at the moment and might switch to LinkedIn Recruiter soon. I was wondering if there's a way I can use the scrolling banners, or do I have to have Premium Business? It seems odd that it wouldn't be a feature with all Premium subscriptions.
